Pain Management
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations. We have a variety of pain medications which we use alone or in combinations based on the patient, their pain tollerance, and the procedure performed.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Many pets have allergic reactions. The most common one is facial swelling. Your pet will have sudden swelling of the lips, cheeks, eye lids and ears. This allergic reaction is serious only if the swelling involves the throat area. Make sure the pet is breathing normally. If there is difficulty in breathing the pet MUST be seen as soon as possible. If the breathing is fine then you can give Benadryl (See information in first aid kit), monitor closely, and seek veterinary care if not improving or getting worse.

Ear Infection Treatment
We see many ear problems especially in dogs. If you need care before you get into a veterinarian here are a few things you can do. If the ears are very red and the dog is scratching then you can give Benadryl. If the ears are hot and painful aspirin might help. If the ears are full of "stuff" you can clean it with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Pour into ear, massage, let the pet shake his head and then soak out the remainder with a cotton ball.

As your cat begins to age we recommend adjusting their health needs. Cats over 12 years of age are considered geriatric patients. We recommend an annual examination that includes the physical examination, chest x-rays, blood work, thyroid evaluation, fecal examination, EKG, blood pressure and urinalysis. These are done as a geriatric evaluation in hopes to pick up health issues before they present with clinical signs. Additionally, vaccinations, heartworm tests, and dental evaluations and cleaning when needed should be continued.

Arizona is a full service companion animal hospital. It is our commitment to provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your dog or cat. Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for young, healthy pets; early detection and treatment of disease as your pet ages; and medical and surgical care as necessary during his or her lifetime.
Spaying and Neutering
We recommend starting preventative care between 6-8 weeks of age for puppies. It begins with a complete examination, fecal exam, and the first series of vaccinations (DA2PP). At this time we discuss early behavior patterns such as house training. We recommend seeing the patient every 3 weeks for a total of four (4) visits. During the visits all the vaccinations (including Rabies), behavior issues, and other health measures will be addressed. Finally we highly recommend surgical sterilization (neuter, spay) at around six (6) months of age, and a microchip implant.

Laboratory Services
Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing. We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations.
X-Ray
No surgery is ever 100% safe. We always weigh the benefits against the drawbacks of a procedure. We try to reduce the chance of any problems by making sure you have given us a good history on the patient and we have done a physical examination. Additional procedures like presurgical blood work, EKG and chest x-rays are all things we can do to reduce the risks of a

If the kitten is a stray or little history is known then it should be tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV). If it will be an outdoor cat it should be vaccinated for FeLV. At this time we discuss early behavior patterns such as litter pan training. We recommend seeing the patient every 3 weeks for a total of three (3) visits. During the visits all the vaccinations, behavior issues and other health measures will be addressed. Finally we highly recommend surgical sterilization (neuter, spay) at around six (6) months of age, and at that time we give the Rabies vaccination and recommend a microchip implant.
