A highlight of the trip was ou...

A highlight of the trip was our lunch at American Spoon in Petoskey. We were there on Sunday, and they must have had a big brunch rush as they were out of eggs...I know who runs out of eggs?!!! as well as other things like fava beans. We still managed to find something to order and enjoyed our meal immensely.

My only gripe was my supposedly well done, no pink, burn it hamburger was pink...very pink. I closed my eyes and ate it anyway, it was really good, not because it was undercooked but because of the addition of absolutely divine apple onion jam. It's sweet and rich with balsamic flavor, the perfect compliment to a burger. I had to go back next door and buy a jar after eating it. I had wanted one when we were in the store, but had hesitated when Brad said it was awful. He's wrong, it's awesome and my brother agrees.

He and my mom got the whitefish sandwich, a premium sandwich with a large pan seared fillet, the cucumber and dill slaw complimented the whitefish with a hint of citrus. Dad got a Roast Turkey with exactly two spears of asparagus, minus the fava beans they were out of, and on sourdough. His review was, "I've got no complains." After some pressing for details, he elaborated with, "It was good." That's actually saying a lot for him. The only miss was Brad's Porchetta, a roast pork sandwich with salsa verde, fresh mozzarella, and spicy greens on cibatta. It was a misorder, he's not overly fond of salsa, doesn't like mozzarella, or "fancy" greens. I'm not even sure why he ordered it.

Each of our meals came with a choice of green bean salad, potato salad, or house-made chips, of which our party tried the frist two. The green beans are in a vinigrette with radish and according to our server, there's also asparagus in it. Not that there was any in either of the sides served with the whitefish. The joke was that it was green bean salad as in one green bean, not really there were a few more than one but not many. The servings of potato salad were heartier, with a cream sauce. It was very nice and light but not overly flavorful.

Four of us ending the meal with a single serving of gelato, you can choose up to two flavors per bowl. The Blood Orange was citrus sweet with none of the tartness, which was the opposite of the Lemon. That was so tart as to be almost bitter. ER loved hers, mom didn't. Ask for a sample first. Mom also had the Blueberry and Dave also got the Blood Orange as well as Mango.

While the meals may not have been an success with each diner, it was still a high point in the trip because of the ambience. Large windows let diners enjoy the grassy park nearby and flood the eatery with sunlight. Black and white striped awnings and the light wood decor give the place a European feel.
