Above are the things that you should look for when buying new shoes. You want the sole to be firm in the middle of the foot. If this is flimsy then you will place more stress on your arch/midfoot. This often is the cause of plantar fasciitis/heel pain. The heel should be stable and not flimsy and the twisting motion of the shoe should be firm.

Ankle Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive way to treat a variety of problems within the ankle joint. The subtalar joint, which is the joint below your ankle, can also be accessed through the scope. Removal of loose portions of bone, bone spurs, and soft tissue thickening are the most common indication for the scope. I also use the scope to repair cartilage damage by means of "micorfracture". Ankle fusion, or allowing the joint to grow together, is also a treatment option.

This is a typical illustration of the postoperative findings with a midfoot fusion/Lapidus type of bunionectomy. This is for moderate to severe bunions with a larger intermetatarsal (angle between 1 and 2) angle. Note the 2 sesmoid bones are realigned under the head of the metatarsal as they should be normally.

Plantar Fasciitis
Inserts can be very effective at treating plantar fasciitis. The reason they are helpful is because you are controlling the motion of the foot and preventing the plantar fascia from excessively stretching. This often times is needed in combination with using a good pair of shoes. Often times adding an insert into a shoe makes the shoe harder to wear, so often you are restricted to what kind of shoes you can wear. It is worth the hassle if you can get this foot pain to go away.
