Likewise, there may be clients who prefer to have their primary care physician prescribe their psychotropic medication but who wish to consult with a psychiatrist. For these clients, I am available for a consultation in which I will give my treatment recommendation to their primary care physician. It is my practice philosophy that the maintenance of an open line of communication between the psychiatrist, primary care physician and therapist be allowed.

Sleep Disorders
Insomina – characterized by an inability to sleep and/or to be incapable of remaining asleep for a reasonable period. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and nonorganic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder. It is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, or caffeine. An overactive mind or physical pain may also be causes. Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is usually necessary to cure it.
Family Practice
In order to appropriately diagnose a psychiatric or psychological problem, I offer a comprehensive psychiatric consultation. I take special care in gathering the right information to determine the most likely diagnosis and most effective treatment. I consider a variety of aspects of one's situation when determining the best treatment plan which may include information about health, illness, and past treatment (medical and psychiatric); family health; information about child development; academic/work performance and friends; family relationships; a thorough psychiatric interview; and if necessary, laboratory studies such as blood tests, or imaging studies.

Neurology

Mental Health
As of October 2019, Dr. Novak has been hired as a forensic expert in approximately 550 cases. He has served as a forensic evaluator on behalf of the Santa Clara, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties' superior court expert witness panels, private criminal and civil attorneys as well as a consultant for the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Novak believes in the importance of developing and maintaining high standards of excellence for mental health expert witnesses.
