In addition to being specialists in female reproductive systems, Ob-Gyns are considered primary care physicians and take a holistic approach to help women be as healthy as possible.
Family Practice
Every woman is different. The North American Menopause Society says decisions about hormone therapy should be based on the severity of your symptoms, your personal and family health history, and your own beliefs about menopause treatments. Your healthcare provider will be able to help you with your decision.
Emergency Care
When you arrive at Baptist Memorial Hospital for delivery, you will check in first at the emergency room’s admissions desk. From there, you will be admitted to one of the hospital’s 6 birthing suites designated for labor, delivery and recovery. The hospital staff will also notify your OB doctor.
Immunizations
An annual well-woman exam is the best way to stay proactive about your gynecological health. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends these annual exams begin between the ages of 13 and 15. During your annual appointment, you and your doctor will discuss a range of topics, including menstrual cycle concerns, vaccinations, and sexually transmitted diseases. Depending on your age, your doctor may also conduct a Pap smear, reproductive health screening, or cancer screening.

Gynecology
When possible, women should consider a pre-pregnancy visit with their Ob-Gyn. This allows you and your provider to identify any health issues that could impact pregnancy, address risk factors, adjust medications and prepare for a healthy pregnancy. It’s important for the health of both the mom and future baby for any chronic health problems to be well-controlled.

An Oxford native, Dr. William E. Henderson has been with the Oxford Clinic for Women since 1999. His father, Dr. William H. Henderson, was one of the original partners in the practice. Dr. Henderson graduated from Millsaps College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in philosophy. He then attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, graduating in 1995. His residency in obstetrics and gynecology — partly inspired by his father’s career — was completed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Endometriosis
Many factors can influence fertility. The fallopian tubes, which carry the egg from the ovaries to the uterus, can be blocked or scarred from past infections or endometriosis. Issues with hormones produced by reproductive organs, the thyroid gland or pituitary gland can also impact fertility. Lifestyle factors play a role in fertility, too. For women who weigh too little or too much, conception can be more difficult, according to American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Although moderate exercise generally helps fertility, too much strenuous exercise – more than five hours a week of intense work outs – can disrupt ovulation.

Cervical Cancer
The first prenatal visit, usually set around eight weeks gestation, tends to be the longest and most involved. If this is your first visit to the clinic, the medical team will want to make sure they have a full medical history. For all pregnant women, this first visit will include a physical exam, gathering vital statistics like height, weight and blood pressure, blood and urine tests and a cervical cancer test. Your physician may also recommend vaccinations to protect mom and baby. Via an ultrasound, you may get your first glimpse of the developing baby, which will be about the size of a raspberry. This exam allows your medical team to check on the location of the fetus and take measurements to further pinpoint a due date.

Mental Health
Your doctor may ask questions about your eating habits, physical activity, tobacco use and mental health as well as menstrual cycles, sexual history and birth control. As part of the visit, your physician or nurse practitioner will gauge your overall health. Information on height, weight and blood pressure are gathered at each visit as part of a general exam. Most annual visits will include routine blood and urine tests as well.

A digital mammogram is an X-ray of your breast taken to screen for breast cancer and to investigate lumps that can be felt during a breast exam. We recommend routine digital mammograms and cancer screenings for all women over the age of 40.

Uterine fibroids are primarily noncancerous tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. Although fibroid tumors do not always cause symptoms, they can cause pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Gynecologists have a range of options to address fibroids, including medication, fertility-preserving procedures, hysterectomy and minimally invasive procedures that leave the uterus in place.
