After graduating Brown University, Dr. Winters received his Doctorate from University of Connecticut is 1980. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, followed by a year of general surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. His orthopaedic residency was at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. He then completed an A.O. Fellowship in Trauma Hannover, West Germany, followed by Fellowships in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard Medical School. There, he served as Assistant Team Physician for the Department of Athletics of Harvard University.
