MRI
First of all, did you know that disc bulging is a natural part of the aging process? Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is as normal as wrinkles and grey hair when we are over the age of 40. In fact, studies have shown that 50% of 40 yr. olds without back pain have MRI findings that show disc bulging. The percentage of bulges increases with each decade (60% of 50 yr. olds, 70% of 60 yr. olds, etc.). Click here for more information. So, you might ask how do I know if my pain is caused by the disc bulge seen on my MRI or is just a normal part of aging? Well short of undergoing a very painful procedure known as provocation discography, the only thing that has proven to be reasonably accurate is a mechanical assessment by a clinician who is specially trained to identify signs and symptoms of symptomatic disc bulges. The phenomenon seen during a mechanical assessment known as centralization and peripheralization has been associated with these symptomatic disc related conditions.

Sciatica
Back and neck pain are very common conditions affecting most humans on this planet at some point in time. Among the many structures cited to cause pain in these regions probably the most common and most feared is the intervertebral disc. Disc herniations occur due to fissuring or tearing in the outer layers of the disc which allows the gel like substance in the center of the disc to compress or leak out to the pain sensitive structures in the outer layers of the disc and the various tissues adjacent to the disc (ligaments, nerves, etc.). Most often the tearing occurs on the back or sides of the disc near the nerves which go to the legs in the lower back or the arms when it occurs in the neck, which can cause sciatica (leg pain) or brachialgia (arm pain).

Physical Therapy
Don Stover was born and raised in Moore/South Oklahoma City graduating from Moore High School in 1986. He graduated from Langston University in 1994 with a BS in physical therapy. In 2011 he earned a doctorate degree in physical therapy (DPT) from A.T. Still University. He is certified through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy (OCS). Don was the first healthcare provider in the Oklahoma City metro area to become credentialed in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) aka The McKenzie Method. His entire career has been focused on outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy, with a special interest in the spine. In 2007 he established Stover Physical Therapy. Don has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Oklahoma Physical Therapy Association since 1992.

Aquatic Therapy
Ai (meaning “love”) Chi (“breath/essence/ being”) is a graceful form of aquatic exercise that involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner using deep breathing and accompanied by relaxing music and low lighting. It was originally created to be the precursor to a Watsu aquatic therapy session. It was originally intended to allow the Watsu receiver to relax, gain stability, coordinate breathing, and gain confidence in the Watsu instructor. Ai Chi combines Tai Chi and Qi Gong concepts of positioning and controlled motion, carried out while standing in shoulder-deep water. It has since been used as a standalone exercise and therapy program separate from Watsu.
Manual Therapy
Most sessions usually last about 1 hour and typically consists of varied amounts of therapeutic exercise/activity, manual therapy techniques (joint/soft tissue mobilization, joint manipulation), patient education/instruction, and if necessary thermal/electrical agents (ice, heat, electrical simulation, etc.). Upon discharge each patient is taught appropriate and realistic strategies to minimize recurrence or progression of their pain and/or disability.
