Eye Exam
AMD is usually detected during a routine eye exam before there are any noticeable symptoms. The symptoms include blurred vision, fuzzy vision, straight lines may appear wavy, some things may appear smaller than they actually are, and empty spaces in the center of your vision. While these symptoms are not exclusive to AMD, if you have them, it is important to get an eye exam right away.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the more common conditions that affect diabetes. It’s actually the leading cause of blindness in adults in the U.S. This particular condition causes damage to the retina, which is the portion of the eye consisting of nerves. It’s the part of the eye that receives light and transfers images to the brain. Two main types of diabetic retinopathy exist: nonproliferative retinopathy and proliferative retinopathy. With nonproliferative retinopathy, the small vessels in the back of the eye begins to swell. They then form pouches and eventually rob the retina of its blood supply. On the other hand, proliferative retinopathy causes new blood vessels to grow, which prevents the retina from getting enough blood. The new vessels are weak, and it’s possible for blood to leak from them. This condition causes floaters, blurred vision, black spots in your field of vision, and a loss of your central vision.

Ultrasound
Today, cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes. At Kunesh Eye Center, cataracts are removed in the most advanced way, using a technique called phacoemulsification. After applying a local anesthetic, a small incision, as small as 1/8th of an inch is then made in the front part of the eye. The cataract is broken into microscopic particles using high energy ultrasound waves and gently suctioned from the eye. After safely removing the eyeâ€™s natural lens an artificial lens is implanted into the eye. Some of the newest advances being performed at Kunesh Eye Center include limbal relaxing incisions to correct astigmatism and new intraocular lens technology to allow patients to see without glasses after surgery.

Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. John C. Kunesh graduated from Alter High School and went on to receive his Bachelorâ€™s Degree from the University of Notre Dame graduating with highest honors. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, an honor society for top collegiate graduates. He received his medical degree with honors from Ohio State University, graduating third in his class. He received numerous honors including election to Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor society for top medical school graduates, the Watman Achievement Award for academic excellence and the Eli G. Alcorn Award for the top medical student in ophthalmology. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Ohio State University and was honored with the position of Chief Resident in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery at Ohio State University. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Wright State University, where he is active in teaching medical students. Dr. John Kunesh also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Ohio State University, serving as a surgical instructor at the Dayton VA Medical Center for the ophthalmology residents.
