Anterior uveitis can occur as a result of trauma to the eye, such as a blow or foreign body penetrating the eye. It can also be a complication of other eye disease, or it may be associated with general health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, rubella and mumps. In most cases, there is no obvious underlying cause.

Dr. Jennifer Redmond graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2009 from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree Magna Cum Laude from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2013. Dr. Redmond then completed a primary care residency at the William V. Chappell, Jr. Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Daytona Beach, Florida. During her residency, she worked with retina and cornea specialists as well as with general ophthalmology. Dr. Redmond has a special interest in ocular disease and contact lenses. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, Illinois Optometric Association, Beta Sigma Kappa Honorary Society and Tomb and Key Honorary society. In her free time, Dr. Redmond enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Infectious Diseases
In addition, health care workers, laboratory and janitorial staff, and other workers may be at risk of acquiring infectious diseases from eye exposure. Some infectious diseases can be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the eye as a result of direct exposure to blood splashes, respiratory droplets generated during coughing, or from touching the eyes with contaminated fingers or other objects.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disorder leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve, and is characterized by loss of nerve tissue resulting in loss of vision. The optic nerve is a bundle of about one million individual nerve fibers and transmits the visual signals from the eye to the brain. The most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, is associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. This increase in pressure may cause progressive damage to the optic nerve and loss of nerve fibers. Vision loss may result. Advanced glaucoma may even cause blindness. Not everyone with high eye pressure will develop glaucoma, and many people with normal eye pressure will develop glaucoma. When the pressure inside an eye is too high for that particular optic nerve, whatever that pressure measurement may be, glaucoma will develop.

Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is a loss of vision in the exact center of the field of vision. It is caused by changes to the macula, the central portion of the retina. The retina is the nerve tissue that makes up the inner wall of the back of our eye, and the macula is the central part of the retina, which is responsible for clear, sharp focus. We can see objects in our off-center (peripheral) visual field, but if we really want to see their minute details (letters, for example) we need to point our macula at the object. Macular degeneration doesn’t cause total blindness, but it worsens your quality of life by blurring or causing a blind spot in your central vision. Central vision that is lost to macular degeneration cannot be restored, but later in this article you’ll find thoughts on prevention and aids in coping with the vision loss of macular degeneration.

Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending upon its size and location, it can interfere with normal vision. Most cataracts develop in people over age 55, but they occasionally occur in infants and young children. Usually cataracts develop in both eyes, but one may be worse than the other.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective outpatient procedures. Advanced artificial intraocular lenses (IOLs) have allowed patients to recover their vision and reduce their need for glasses. Less invasive surgical techniques have made the entire process safer, with faster recovery times. The procedure is even more efficient than it once was, usually taking less than half an hour from start to finish. Although cataract surgery is generally a safe and effective procedure, it’s still surgery, and that comes with its own set of precautions, risks and considerations you should discuss with your doctor.

Take antioxidant and zinc supplements. For people with moderate to advanced macular degeneration, findings from the National Eye Institute-sponsored Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) indicate that taking high doses of zinc, beta carotene, and vitamins C and E is effective in reducing the risk of further vision loss. However, beta carotene has been linked to increased risk of lung cancer in smokers. Too much vitamin E can be toxic. Ask your doctor about these supplements before trying anything on your own.

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition occurring in persons with diabetes, which causes progressive damage to the retina, the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. It is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes.

Ultrasound
Small incision cataract surgery involves making an incision in the side of the cornea, the clear outer covering of the eye, and inserting a tiny probe into the eye. The probe emits ultrasound waves that soften and break-up the lens so it can be removed by suction. This process is called phacoemulsification.

Skin Cancer
Most chalazia disappear without treatment in several weeks to a month. However, they often recur. Rarely, they may be an indication of an infection or skin cancer.
