Kitchen Remodeling

Fireplaces
Over the course of seven years, RRA transformed 75,000sf of the 495-room hotel into welcoming spaces of activity by making the lobby visible from the street by redesigning the porte-cochere and suspending a 3-story fireplace and custom chandeliers in the lobby. RRA renovated 45,000sf of existing ballrooms, added 15,000sf of new meeting space on the fourth floor roof and transformed the old laundry in the basement into a conference center.

Landscaping and Fencing

Landscaping
New York Institute of Technology Mansion, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built for Alfred I. Du Pont who commissioned Carrere & Hastings in 1916 to design this neo-Georgian estate. The house and landscaping embody the extravagance of a by-gone Gilded Age. It passed through the Phipps and Guest families before becoming a part of NYIT’s Old Westbury campus in 1972 where it has since been used as an event center. Beginning in 2010, with funding from a Save America’s Treasures Grant, RRA helped restore crumbling garden walls and the grand eastern staircase. In an unusual twist, RRA was able to source marble from the same quarry that had been salvaged from a NYC mansion constructed for the Phipps family in 1905. The marble pieces were reworked almost 100 years later and brought back to life in the restoration. Currently, RRA is again working with Cameron Engineering Associates in the continued preservation, rehabilitation and restoration of the facade, roof, and gardens.
Irrigation Systems
Beginning with a programming charrette with the university, RRA transformed 62,000sf on seven floors into classrooms, a simulation trading room, student lounges and Wellness, Counselling and Career Services for the 2,500 students at NYIT’s Manhattan campus. We met an aggressive six-week design and five-month construction schedule so that the building could open by the Fall semester. The gut renovation included modernization of two hydraulic elevators, a new platform lift to Cellar for full accessibility and complete building infrastructure with new air handlers, electrical distribution and expanded fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Faceted walls and dynamic resin in terrazzo floors draw students down from the lobby to a place they can claim as their own to hang out, study and meet – an indoor commons in an urban satellite campus.

Siding
Our long-time developer client decided to return to his childhood home with the idea of becoming a gentleman farmer on his 30-acre property. Having previously renovated and expanded his main house with its fieldstone cladding and wood siding, he wanted a new barn with timber and metal detailing on a field stone foundation, typical of the area. The new 1,200sf barn is sited at the top of the hill from the house and replaced an old lean-to that had collapsed into ruin. The new barn will accommodate tractor storage, a workshop for produce-sorting and carpentry, a studio office and bedroom and an expansive common area that will double as an event space or retreat, making use of the client’s organic farming endeavors and the views of the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Masonry
RRA was commissioned to design Peruvian Connection’s NYC flagship store, located in a landmark building within the Upper West Side Historic District. The new storefront was designed to highlight the company’s brand presence while complementing the neighborhood’s historic fabric, using a unique color yet traditional vocabulary and details. RRA moved the location of the existing entry to improve the interior logic of the retail space and developed an interior design concept, including new custom casework and lighting, that incorporated the client’s collection of vintage furniture and the space’s original masonry arches.
