In 1955, four local independent grocers joined a group of existing Akron-area grocers who had established their own retail-owned warehouse, Betsy Ross Foods, which is now known as Sparkle Markets. The market operates a bakery that sells cakes, Italian bread, rolls and doughnuts. Its meat department offers USDA Choice meats that include ham loaves, meatballs and Italian sausages. Sparkle Markets provides handicap parking and an in-store ATM facility. It also offers handicap and infant-carrier carts and photo development services. In addition, it supports various local community organizations. The company provides several online recipes, including grilled salmon nicoise, shrimp and orzo pilaf, chicken parmigiana, black bean soup, gingered pear sauce, orange yogurt, cavatelli with cabbage and pork tenderloin. It also provides online games, nutritional tips and health-related information for children. With a store location in New Cumberland, W.Va., Sparkle Markets operates more than 20 stores in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
