I'm a fan of the shelter. Because it is an independent agency and not directly controlled by the county, they can keep animals as long as they choose to.

This means there is no "death row countdown" just because a dog or cat has been there for more than a month.

I also don't have a problem with their fee schedule for services. I hear people complain, but these fees are for people who use the shelter services. The alternative would be for them to start charging the county a higher rate and just taking more tax dollars from the general fund.

This way, folks who don't use the services aren't paying for them.

We've gotten pets from here, and we've dropped pets off. I used to volunteer here when I was younger and still donate when I can.

Overall, I believe everyone there really cares about the animals.

Do not adopt a pet from these ...

Do not adopt a pet from these people! They will harrass and hound you over the smallest thing until your dying day! It's like these people have nothing better to do than to send threatening letters to people who choose adoption over a pet shop. Frankly, they make me wish I'd gone to a pet store.

Our (indoor) cat isn't even a year old yet and we're setting up the appointment this week to get him neutered. We've received one threatening letter already and a fine in the mail for the "infraction". This is ridiculous! They've threatened to take us to court over the matter. Are you KIDDING me?!

Our kitten came to us smelling so badly like cigarette smoke that it took three baths to get it out and so addicted to table food that it took us two weeks to get him to eat pet food normally.

Just Awful

I used to volunteer at the New Castle Shelter and I hated it then as much as I do now. I was filling up a cat food bowl when I volunteered and was told I had to empty most of it and I did until you could literally see the silver bottom of the bowl and the lady told me that was good. Mind you, I was filling up the bowl when I went in Saturday... no one goes in on Sunday. How can a cat survive on that much food until Monday? Idiots. They always had people bringing in donations of food, litter, toys, etc. because they "couldn't afford it. Then just after I stopped going, they got new vans, a new sign, electric can openers, etc.. When I was there one day volunteering, I got scolded for petting a cat and not scrubbing the nasty place until it shined even though I had been working very hard all morning while they sat around doing nothing.

A guy who worked there, whom I actually liked very much because I could tell he truly loved animals, was on the news about four years ago saying how they inhumanely euthanize animals. I adopted a cat while volunteering and a day after I brought him home, he became very ill. He had horrible diarrhea, he vomited and became very lethargic. It took him over a week to recuperate after being seen by my vet and being put on fluids because he was dehydrated. They didn't think he was going to make it and luckily he turned around.

I was in the shelter a couple weeks ago and it's just as nasty as ever. I feel so worry for the animals there. They get no attention and are living in horrible conditions and looked after by people not qualified for their jobs. I have filed a complaint with the health department and I will be filing more with other offices to have something done.

I encourage anyone else complaining or noticing these horrible living conditions and rude and unqualified personnel issues, to file complaints to the local health department.

poor dogs/rude personal

we had a stray dog running around that on numerous ocasions growled at us and our neighbors. living in the country we thought he was a wild dog. myself and neighbors having kids, called the pound on numerous ocasions to come and get the dog in which they would come out sometimes try for a few minuits and leave unsuccessful. it took they stray dog attacking my 5lb house dog and paralizing her mobility with a $300.00 vet bill to all happen before they would come and forcefully get the dog. We went down about two weeks later to inquire about the dog(breed, blood test, etc.) and the dog was up for adoption with a posting that said very friendly. Are you kidding me. That place is a joke and needs to be shut down. Half the dogs in there they adopt are agressive and not what they claim to be. At the front office ladies need to find new jobs. When you deal with the public on a day to day basis it's called common curtisey. You guys should have some.

What a joke

This place is a sorry excuse for a shelter. We actually pay these people with our tax dollars??? We had to call them numerous times to pick up a not so friendly stray dog in our neighborhood. They would come out, attemp to catch the dog then leave. All the time wasting gas and our hard earned dollars. By the way...why do they get to drive all over town everyday in company vehicles?

are you kidding me

first of all the people that work there are not only ignorant but they are about as rude as they come. second, getting any information out of them is like pulling teeth and third, i know of at least 2 people who adopted dogs from them and the dogs had parvo and they are supposed to treat them for that before they are sold because it spreeds very easy and now her sister's dog also has parvo. so to sum it up dont go there and if you see a dog on the street do it a favor and DON'T bring it to them!!!!
