My family has long taken our dogs to Dr. Lanier. As far back as I can remember, my parents took our dogs to him. So when my cockatoo started favoring one leg and holding the other up all the time, and internet websites strongly urged me to take her to a vet, I took her to Dr. Lanier. (Favoring one leg can mean a deadly diagnosis or an egg problem in females, so I was in a panic). Dr. Lanier is a very calm doctor. He looked her over, felt her leg and claw and her grip. He also removed the leg band, as these can get caught on toys, etc. and have broken birds' legs before. He felt that nothing was broken and she probably sprained it. He said to bring her back in a week if she was still favoring that leg and he would x-ray it. He could've charged me for x-rays right then, bloodwork, or lots of tests, but instead, he was right - she healed - and I was out of there with an office visit charge. I was very happy that my bird was fine & that I didn't have to spend a lot of money.
