Dental Examination
The clinical examination will disclose visual findings, and Dr. Shanahan will make treatment recommendations. We will also discuss with you what the next steps are and how we can make orthodontic treatment affordable within your budget. If orthodontic treatment is indicated, you will have the opportunity for us to take the needed impressions and photographs and digital 3d x-rays to get started with treatment. For our patients who are 12 or older, you can expect to spend about 45 minutes with us during this visit if you decide to go through with treatment. If you are younger, or not ready to start treatment, the new patient exam last about 20 minutes.

X-rays

Teeth Cleaning
The American Dental Association recommends that you, and your child, visit the dentist every six months for regular checkups and routine teeth cleanings. We would love to see you here every six months to make sure that your smile is staying healthy!

Crowns

Dentures
Maxillary wrap-around retainers are your upper retainers, which are removable. You must be very careful when handling your upper retainers, as they are fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep them in this case when not wearing it! To clean these retainers, brush them with toothpaste (sometimes with denture cleaner) using warm water.

Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr Shanahan also worked closely with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF in completing his masterâ€™s thesis on the innovative use of 3D radiology in virtual treatment planning of jaw surgery.

The virtually invisible aligners, which are made of a thermoplastic material uniquely developed for the Invisalign treatment plan, look similar to tooth-whitening trays. Invisalign aligners are custom-made for you and only you to move your teeth in the sequence determined by your doctor.
