Child Support
Driving While License Suspended in the Third Degree (DWLS 3) is the most common criminal charge filed in Skagit County, Island County, Snohomish County or Whatcom County. DWLS 3 misdemeanor and is punishable by 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine. Unlike DWLS 1or DWLS 2 there is no further license suspension upon conviction. The basis for this license suspension is usually issues such as unpaid traffic tickets, child support issues or simply not getting reinstated after a prior license suspension.

Criminal Defense
Powers Law Group began as Powers & Costeck in 2005 when Ron Costeck and Jason Powers left the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to start a private practice. In a short period of time, Powers & Costeck grew to one of the larger private criminal law firms in Skagit County, Washington. In 2018, Ron Costeck accepted a position as the Island County District Court Commissioner. Once Ron donned a robe, Jason Powers renamed the firm Powers Law Group and kept the focus of the firm the same. DUI/DWI

Sex Crimes
Apart from the registration requirement that a sex offense mandates, other severe consequences will arise. Significant jail or prison time usually accompanies a conviction. Once a person leaves prison, the Department of Corrections can limit where the person goes, to whom he or she can talk, and even what he or she can watch on television or access on the computer. In addition to these consequences, and depending on the charge, a person can be subject to the Indeterminate Sentencing Review Board. (ISRB). If a person is convicted of a crime subject to the ISRB, he or she may be held in custody past the original sentence due to the nature of the conviction. Finally, in Washington state, a person convicted of a sex offense can be subject to the "Two Strike" law governing sex offenses. This law allows a term of life imprisonment if the person has two convictions for certain sex offenses.
Fraud
Powers enrolled in law school at the University of California at Davis. It was at Davis where he first had court room experience. He interned at the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Arguing before judges for the first time himself, Powers realized how impactful an attorney can be in someone’s life. He worked in the Insurance Fraud Unit and would assist people whose identities were stolen and other victims of white-collar crimes. Additionally, Powers worked as a Research Assistant for Friedrich Juenger. This assignment was mainly to assist Professor Juenger in writing a book on the Conflict of Laws. Powers also studied International Criminal Law at the Trinity College Dublin in 2000. Aside from studying law, he became familiar with his Irish heritage and Guinness.

Misdemeanors
Washington has many different charges for assault, including assault in the first, second, third, and fourth degree, and assault of a child in the first, second, and third degree. These charges can also have a domestic violence tag added to them, which can increase penalties. Assault in the first, second, and third degree and assault of a child in the first, second, and third degree are felonies. Assault in the fourth degree is a misdemeanor. Other crimes that are under the assault section of Washington’s criminal code include drive-by shooting, promoting a suicide attempt, and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence. Interfering with the reporting of domestic violence is a charge we see often, especially if a victim is prevented from using his or her cell phone to call 911 or seek medical assistance.

Murder
Powers graduated from law school in 2001. He worked as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in both King and Lewis Counties. This required him to prosecute many misdemeanor cases, including DUI, Assault and Domestic Violence (DV) charges. When a position opened in Skagit County, Powers moved north to the valley. He remembered how much he enjoyed this part of the state and jumped at the opportunity to move there. As a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Skagit County, he continued to try DUI and DV cases. He also gained experience in felony charges, such as Vehicular Homicide, Attempted Murder and other serious felonies. His four years of experience working as a prosecutor prepared him to serve as a criminal defense attorney because he has been on the other side and knows how they operate.
Juvenile Crimes
If the juvenile crime was a class A felony, you must have at least five years n the community without being convicted of a crime. RCW 13.50.260(4)(a)(i);
Homicide
You haven't been convicted of vehicular assault or vehicular homicide within seven years before the incident for which you are requesting the ILL.
Restraining Order
You are not currently nor have you have been restrained by any type of protection or restraining order in the past five years. RCW 9.96.020(2)(i);
