Criminal Defense
Launched by Maslon in September 2017, UPLIFT is a legal diversity pipeline nonprofit serving middle school students reflecting the rich diversity of the Twin Cities. The afterschool mock trial program is taught by volunteer attorneys and law students who meet with participating middle school students throughout the academic year, instructing them on the legal profession, the court system, and key criminal law and practice concepts. Participation in the program helps students build confidence, develop analytical and speaking skills, foster long term vision, and create a framework to pursue academic excellence in high school. In the fall, UPLIFT will initiate a mentoring program for its graduates as they move into high school.
Murder
In 2020, at the request of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Steve Schleicher of Maslon and Jerry Blackwell of Blackwell Burke joined the broader prosecution team as pro bono special prosecutors in the 2021 trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Schleicher and Blackwell ultimately played leading roles in voir dire, the opening statement, witness examination, and closing arguments, which proved pivotal in convincing the jury to return guilty verdicts on all charges. Widely considered the highest-profile police brutality case since the 1991 beating of Rodney King, the outcome was not only viewed as a landmark moment in U.S. criminal justice history, it was felt deeply by community members worldwide.
Manslaughter
This year, UPLIFT participants were assigned to teams representing either the prosecution or defense in the fictional manslaughter case of State of Minnesota v. Dannie LeLuca. To lend authenticity to the experience, students presented their cases before sitting Minnesota judges, including Luis Bartolomei and Sydnee Woods of Hennepin County District Court and Ramsey County District Judge JaPaul Harris.

I think what makes Maslon different from other firms is the hands-on experience, the firm culture, and the firm's emphasis on mentorship. The summer program coordinators took great care to ensure that that I received a diverse and interesting mix of projects. I worked on a variety of cases with legal issues ranging from trade dress infringement, to comparative fault, to an NBA player trade dispute, to employment discrimination. I was asked to make substantive and important contributions to cases. Typically, my contribution was through legal research and writing, but I was also regularly asked for my input on case strategy. I was treated as if I were already an associate at the firm, and my contributions were valued as such.

Matter of Otto Bremer Trust, the Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s removal of one of three trustees of a large charitable trust that held approximately $2 billion in assets. Removing the trustee was proper, the Court of Appeals said, because the cumulative effect of the trustee’s several “improprieties” amounted to a serious breach of trust. Perhaps most significantly, the trustee made several aggressive attempts to implement a “hostile takeover” of a company whose shares were held by the charitable trust.
