Concussions: The CDC defines a concussion as “a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth”. The American Academy of Pediatrics published a study that identified cheerleading as having one of the highest rates of concussion sustained during practice, second to football. The greatest risk for sustaining a concussion occurs while stunting and all members of the stunt group appear to be at risk.

Ear Infections
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most common cause of vertigo. While this sounds like a scary, long-winded prognosis, it is essentially an inner-ear infection. It occurs when the microscopic calcium crystals known as “canaliths” located in your inner ears break apart and move around to different parts of the ear that they are not supposed to be in. This creates a build-up of canalith clumps, causing certain canals to become blocked. When the inner ear canals are blocked, the correct gravitational messages are unable to make it to the brain, and we become unbalanced, resulting in the sudden spinning sensations of vertigo and inner-ear discomfort.
Urinary Incontinence
With pregnancy, the body experiences many changes, including postural adjustments, increased load on the pelvic floor, and stretching and thickening of the ligaments. Changes such as these can cause back pain and pelvic floor issues. Muscle weakness may also lead to urinary incontinence and difficulty activating core muscles. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome impacts approximately 5% of all Americans, according to the American Physical Therapy Association. The main job of the carpal tunnel is to protect the median nerve on the inside of your wrist, in addition to the tendons you use to bend the fingers. However, it is possible for this tunnel to become constricted, and when it does, nerve compression can result, leading to a variety of symptoms, such as numbness and tingling to the thumb, 1st and 2nd fingers. In addition, pain to the wrist, hand, as well as swelling to the hand and fingers, is even possible. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) can be caused by an injury or by repetitive job-related use, such as assembly-line work, keyboard-heavy work, or driving heavy machinery.

Developed by world-renowned expert physical therapist Robin McKenzie in the 1950s, this well-researched, exercise based approach of assessment, diagnosis and treatment uses a comprehensive and clinically reasoned evaluation of patients without the use of expensive diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-rays and MRIs). The treatment principles of the McKenzie Method promote the body’s potential to repair itself and do not involve the use of medication, heat, cold, ultrasound, needles, or surgery. McKenzie allows patients to learn the principles and empowers them to be in control of their own symptom management, which can reduce dependency on medical intervention.
MRI
As PTs, we can perform a physical exam that helps cue us into what is causing the discomfort. We have tests and measures that have been studied and have statistically supported sensitivity and specificity; however, sometimes other diagnostic tests are indicated. These may include an MRI scan, CT scan, or an EMG/NCV test, to help give a clearer picture of the situation.
X-Rays

Depending on the incident, x-rays and/or CT scans might be performed initially to rule out any serious head trauma, but there are no imaging or blood tests currently to diagnose a concussion. A concussion is a clinical diagnosis based on a history of head/neck trauma and responses to certain clinical tests of eye and head movements.

Sciatica
Back pain and sciatica differ but are often confused with each other. Back is specific to the upper, middle or lower back. Sciatica is a more diffuse, radiating pain down the buttock, thigh, and even leg. It is also possible to have radiculopathy, which is a radiating numbness, tingling, burning, or sharp pain to a specific part of the leg. This is often associated with a herniated disc, or irritation of a nerve of that area as it exits the spine.
Whiplash
Whiplash, typically sustained by an automobile or high-impact sports collision, is one of the most common injuries that results in neck pain. This is known as a “strain” injury, causing the head to whip rapidly back-and-forth, thus affecting the soft tissues in the back of the neck.
Pinched Nerve
Medical News Today, “Radiculopathy, or a pinched nerve in the spine, can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including pain, weakness, and numbness.” Symptoms may also include the feeling of “pins and needles” in the neck and down the arms.
Joint Replacement
If you believe you may be in need of total joint replacement surgery, it is important to discuss that with your primary physician first. If you have already received total joint replacement surgery, it is likely that your primary physician will refer you to a Midlothian, VA physical therapist for part of your recovery treatment.

Frozen Shoulder
Also known as “adhesive capsulitis,” frozen shoulder can occur if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a while, or if you have been bedridden for an extended period of time. It results in a painful loss of motion in the shoulder with a tightening of the shoulder joint that severely limits motion. There are some ethnicities that are more predisposed, and women tend to have more instances than men. Frozen shoulder is more common in women in the 40-60 years of age.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow refers to pain on the lateral or outside aspect of the elbow, whereas golfer’s elbow refers to pain on the medial or inside aspect of the elbow. Both of these injuries are a result of repetitive use injuries and can be attributed to a variety of different tasks, not just the sports they are named after. Physical therapy is the best treatment for either of these conditions, because it restores the underlying joint and soft tissue limitations, that are causing strain to the tendons, and reduces the inflammation quite rapidly.

Ankle Instability
I had Achilles Tendonitis in both tendons as well as ankle instability. I had been in pain for a year and a half and no longer able to run.
