LifeRing: Empower Your Sober Self
- General Info
- The 3-S Philosophy Three-S is short-hand for the fundamental principles of LifeRing: Sobriety, Secularity, and Self-Help. Sobriety. Sobriety can mean different things in dictionaries, but in LifeRing it always means abstinence. The basic membership requirement is a desire to remain abstinent from alcohol and drugs.LifeRing welcomes people regardless of their drug of choice. Please look elsewhere for support if your intention is to keep drinking or using, but not so much, or to stop drinking but continue using, or stop using but continue drinking. The successful LifeRing participant practices the Sobriety Priority, meaning that nothing is allowed to interfere with staying abstinent from alcohol and drugs. The motto is do not drink or use, no matter what. Secularity. LifeRing Recovery welcomes people of all faiths and none. You get to keep whatever religious beliefs you have, and you are under no pressure to acquire any if you dont. Participants spiritual or religious beliefs or lack thereof remain private. Neither religion nor anti-religion normally come up in meeting discussion. Participants are free to attend both LifeRing and Twelve-Step meetings, but LifeRing supports recovery methods that rely on human efforts rather than on divine intervention. Self-Help. Self-help in LifeRing means that the key to recovery is the individuals own motivation and effort. The main purpose of the group process is to reinforce the individual own inner strivings to stay clean and sober. LifeRing is a permanent workshop where individuals can build their own Personal Recovery Plans. LifeRing does not prescribe any particular steps other than abstinence and is not a vehicle for any particular therapeutic doctrine. LifeRing participation is compatible with a wide variety of abstinence-based therapeutic or counseling programs.

- What is LifeRing? LifeRing is a network of support groups for people who want to live free of alcohol and other addictive drugs. How does LifeRing work? LifeRing works through positive social reinforcement. The meeting process empowers the Sober Self within each of us. What is the LifeRing program? The hallmark of a quality treatment program is to match the treatment to the individual. We adopt that same approach in our self-help work. We encourage each participant to work out their own particular path and to use the group process as a workshop for that purpose. We publish a workbook, "Recovery by Choice," as a tool for building one's Personal Recovery Program. Is LifeRing a 12-step program? No. LifeRing is not a spinoff from AA. LifeRing uses a different approach from the 12-step model. See "How it works." If I attend LifeRing, can I also go to AA/NA? Of course. Is LifeRing mainly for atheists or agnostics? No. About 40 per cent of LifeRing participants attend church (or other place of worship) at least once a year. How is LifeRing similar to AA or NA? We are abstinence-based. We use group support. Meetings are confidential. How is LifeRing different from AA/NA? We see the power to get clean and sober inside of each person (the "sober self"). You can get clean and sober regardless of your belief or disbelief in a 'higher power.' We welcome people regardless of their 'drug of choice.' We encourage cross-talk in meetings. We each build Personal Recovery Programs tailored to our individual makeup. What is the LifeRing meeting format? Formats vary, but at most meetings the topic is "How Was Your Week?" Each person reports on the highlights and heartaches of their past week and plans ahead for the decisions of the coming week. Conversation ("cross-talk") is encouraged. Personal drinking/drugging histories ("drunkalogues") are discouraged. The meeting ends with a round of applause to one another for staying clean and sober. Is LifeRing affiliated with another organization, or is it a subsidiary of something else? No. LifeRing is an independent, free-standing organization, not affiliated with any other. How is LifeRing financed? LifeRing is a nonprofit with 501(c)(3) charitable status. LifeRing is supported by passing the basket at meetings, sales of LifeRing Press literature, and individual donations. How come I've never heard of LifeRing before? We're new. LifeRing was founded as a national organization in 2001. The LifeRing story is just getting out.

- The LifeRing approach works mainly by bringing people together. Although some people can stop drinking and drugging in isolation, many people find it more interesting, more fun, and more effective to do it together with others in self-help groups. In face-to-face meetings and in online chats and email lists, you will find other people who used to drink and/or use drugs, and have now stopped. You may be surprised how perfectly ordinary most of the people you meet appear, and how diverse a group of people is bound together by this common denominator. The main purpose of our meetings is to reinforce the desire to get clean and sober that lives within each of us. You will observe this desire in the others, and they will recognize it in you. You will probably hear participants talk about the challenges to their sobriety that they faced during the past week. If you listen, you may find useful information that helps you face similar challenges.

This is a great support group. We talk about what's going on in our lives now and we share practical advice that can be used immediately. It's a small group and I feel very comfortable sharing here. The meeting room is clean, cozy, and modern.
I'm very happy I found LifeRing Coral Way.
