Urinary Incontinence
Stress Urinary Incontinence Surgery may be used to treat urinary incontinence. If non-surgical options don’t work, surgical options are available using either an abdominal incision or laparoscopy. Options include inserting and attaching a sling that acts as a “hammock” to lift and hold the urethra and neck of the bladder, or by using carefully placed stitches to raise the bladder back into position. Surgery is performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.

What does “high risk” mean? Basically it means there are factors that could raise the risk of complications. It doesn’t mean there will be problems, just that you may need more prenatal care and monitoring to minimize or avoid complications.

Cervical Cancer
First, your gynecologist will perform perform a pelvic exam by looking and feeling inside the pelvis. A Pap test, also called a Pap smear, is taken which is a painless swab from the cervix and vagina to detect changes. The cells are examined in a lab to see if there are abnormal cells (called dysplasia) which could lead to cervical cancer.

Ultrasound
Dominion Women’s Health offers ultrasound at three of our locations. Our ultrasounds are performed by specially trained, skilled ultrasound technicians, called sonographers. You often hear the terms “ultrasound” and “sonogram.” What’s the difference? Ultrasound is the technology and sonogram is the exam itself. Usually when you’re pregnant and talking about ultrasounds, more often than not you’re really referring to sonograms.
Chemotherapy
Induced menopause. This happens when the ovaries are surgically removed for medical reasons, such as uterine cancer or endometriosis. It can also happen as a result of damage to the ovaries caused by radiation or chemotherapy. Premature menopause is permanent.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include less pain and risk associated with large incisions, and that usually shortens recovery time. For example a minimally invasive hysterectomy may mean 2-3 weeks recovery versus 6-8 weeks for a traditional hysterectomy.
Robotic Surgery
Robitc system. Some surgery can be performed using a vaginal approach which may not even need an external incision. For other surgeries, laparoscopic or robotic surgery may be the most effective, least invasive treatment.

Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy uses a tiny incision in the abdomen through which a thin tube is inserted. The tube, called a laparoscope allows your surgeon to see the affected area. If a problem is spotted, instruments are inserted through the laparoscope or through other small cuts around the abdomen to complete the surgery. With the da Vinci system, your surgeon uses 1-2 cm incisions to reach the affected area and manipulates da Vinci’s tiny instruments to precisely remove the affected area or treat the problem.

Physical Therapy
Often called overactive bladder, urinary incontinence often occurs in menopause. Women experience a small amount of urine leakage, often when you sneeze or laugh. Frequent urination is also a symptom of an overactive bladder. If leakage is infrequent, the use of panty liners may be sufficient. There are treatment options available including physical therapy, & in office procedures that might be right for you. Talk with your doctor or nurse practitioner about the options available to you.
