We maintain the latest equipment for our in-office colposcopy, hysteroscopy and advanced ultrasound imaging techniques. We perform saline enhanced imaging, which unveils incredible detail of the inner uterine surface. Next, the patient's goals must be identified. Her specific needs are understood before we begin to present the surgical and non-surgical treatment options. Patient education is pivotal in the decision process; we use diagrams, patient handouts and good old-fashioned plain talk. Once the patient is comfortable with her decision, the preparation for surgery begins. She is given specific nutritional and medication instructions. We use this opportunity to encourage healthy habits such as weight loss and smoking cessation.

If an abnormal area is seen during colposcopy, a biopsy may be done. This is a procedure that collects a small sample of tissue for laboratory examination. The biopsy itself is generally performed without anesthesia and women often describe the biopsy procedure as feeling like a mild to moderate menstrual cramp. Minimal bleeding may occur during the procedure and is usually stopped by applying pressure or a topical medication to the biopsy site. A small amount of bleeding may be present after the procedure. Occasionally moderate bleeding may occur. If bleeding becomes similar to a mild to moderate menstrual flow, especially within the first 48 hours after the procedure, a pelvic infection may be suspected. Additional symptoms of a pelvic infection include pelvic pain, fever, and abnormal vaginal discharge. Notify your clinician as soon as possible or contact an emergency room if Student Health is closed. Douching, intercourse and tampons should be avoided for at least 5-7 days from the date of the procedure so that the biopsy sites can heal.

She went on to complete her residency training at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, serving as Administrative Chief Resident. Cervical Cancer
A colposcope is a microscope that resembles a pair of binoculars. The instrument can magnify the cervix 16 times its normal size. It also has color filters that allow the physician to detect tiny abnormal blood vessels on the cervix. The colposcope is inserted through the vaginal opening. The first step of the procedure is examining of the vagina for signs of genital warts or other growths. (Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus, which is a sexually transmitted virus that increases the risk of cervical cancer.) A Pap smear is then taken. The cervix is inspected and the special tests are done. Colposcopy is a safe procedure with no complications other than vaginal spotting of blood. The examiner wants to get a good look at the squamocolumnar junction, which is the area of the cervix that gives rise to most cases of cervical cancer. The term squamocolumnar junction refers to the border between the two different types of cells (squamous cells and columnar cells) that normally form the lining of the endocervical canal. (This canal connects the cervix with the main part of the uterus.) With rare exceptions, cervical cancer originates from the squamous cells and, therefore, is referred to as squamous cervical cancer. During colposcopy, the entire squamocolumnar junction is more likely to be seen in young women. The reason for this is that after menopause, the squamocolumnar junction tends to migrate inside the endocervical canal. Colposcopy, therefore, is often not adequate in women after menopause. Therefore, if the whole squamocolumnar junction area of the cervix is not visible on colposcopy, another type of procedure may need to be performed that allows the entire squamocolumnar junction to be examined. (See cold knife cone biopsy below.)

Ultrasound
The results are very helpful in determining the health of the pregnancy, mother, and baby. Some of the information that can be gathered during an ultrasound are the age of the fetus, rate of growth, fetal position, number of fetuses, and detection of some birth defects. Depending on the progress of the pregnancy, it may be possible to determine the sex of the baby.
Mammography
Screening mammography is the type of mammogram that checks you when you have no symptoms. It can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 70. But it can also have drawbacks. Mammograms can sometimes find something that looks abnormal but isn't cancer. This leads to further testing and can cause you anxiety. Sometimes mammograms can miss cancer when it is there. It also exposes you to radiation. You should talk to your doctor about the benefits and drawbacks of mammograms. Together, you can decide when to start and how often to have a mammogram.

Endometrial Ablation
One in five women suffers excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). This can lead to anemia and fatigue and significantly disrupt a woman's life. A very heavy period can keep you housebound for several days every month.
Laparoscopy
The surgery to diagnose endometriosis is a laparoscopy. This is a type of surgery that uses a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light. The surgeon inserts the laparoscope through a small cut in the skin. Your provider can make a diagnosis based on how the patches of endometriosis look. He or she may also do a biopsy to get a tissue sample.

Lesions
Acetic acid wash: After the cervix is studied with the colposcope, the cervix is washed with a chemical called acetic acid, which is diluted 3 to 5%. The acetic acid washes away mucus and allows abnormal areas to be seen more easily with the colposcope. Moreover, the acetic acid stains the abnormal areas white. The areas that stain white after the acetic acid wash are called acetowhite lesions. Sometimes, however, normal areas can also stain white, but these areas have vague or faint borders. In contrast, significant abnormalities, such as genital warts, pre-cancers (dysplasia), and cancers, generally produce acetowhite areas with distinct and clear boundaries.
