The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection works to serve and safeguard residents and protects the property and resources of California. It offers fire protection and stewardship services more than 30 million acres of privately owned wildland. The department provides varied emergency services in over 35 states and nearly 55 counties of the United States through the contracts with local governments. The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has various firefighters, fire engines and aircraft that respond to approximately 5,600 wildland fires annually. It maintains a communication department that responds to more than 300,000 calls for emergencies annually. In operation for more than 100 years, the department offers fire safety education, as well as supports an aviation program. It also responds to various emergency incidents, such as extended-day fires, floods, earthquakes and hazardous material spills.
