Endometriosis
Endometriosis is common. The most common symptom of endometriosis is pain. Pain arises from the irritation of pelvic tissues (uterus, rectum, ovaries, tubes, bladder) which arises from the secretion of chemicals from the implants of endometriosis. How does it start? Ultrasound
During pregnancy ultrasound is done in the office by Dr. Daum, M.D. with assistance one day a week by Vicki, our sonography technician. Sonograms are used liberally to answer questions or sometimes just for fun or reassurance. A sonogram will usually be performed at your first pregnancy visit. Sonograms are routinely photographed and videotaped with DVDs for keepsakes.
Chemotherapy
One of the most important things in this process is an accurate knowledge of your family history. Many times the exact cancer that a family member had is distorted through the passage of time or lack of medical knowledge. Please prepare yourself by asking questions of those still alive and gather as much information about which family members had cancer, how old they were when diagnosed, in what organ the "primary"cancer was diagnosed, and what sorts of treatments were needed (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery).

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgeries are surgeries that use very small incisions to access the surgical site. Mansfield Miracles with Dr. Paul Daum, M.D. is a leading provider of minimally invasive surgery to treat a wide array of gynecological issues. Our state-of-the-art approaches help women recover more quickly and with less discomfort compared to traditional surgical methods.
Vasectomy
Don't forget VASECTOMY. It's a great method, and you have done your job. See if your man will stand up and take care of the problem with vasectomy.
Robotic Surgery
One must consider the expense, but also there are more incisions, which are Â are high on your abdomen Â and remain visible on your tummy. Who wants that when it's not needed. Robotics had applications in other specialties, but is mostly hype and advertising in Gynecology. Dr. Daum, M.D. has chosen not to perform robotic surgery even though training was offered by the hospital.
Hysterectomy
This is called laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy. Removal of the cervix is advised when there is a history of abnormal pap smears, and sometimes pelvic pain. When the vagina is cut, pain levels are higher, and many times an overnight stay is needed.Â Â
Endometrial Ablation
Hysteroscopic surgery is performed using a scope to operate inside the uterus. As the hysteroscope is placed through the vagina, there are no incisions. Among the most common and useful procedures performed involve treatment of endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids. Endometrial ablation is performed with the hysteroscope.Â
Laparoscopy
Sterilization with laparoscopy ( a day surgery 5 mm scope placed through your navel) is still considered the standard. Vaginal methods such as Essure and Adiana are not offered in my office. Essure has about a 10% failure of placement at surgery, and then takes 3 to 6 months to achieve sterilization.

Laparoscopic surgery results in less post operative pain and a more rapid return to normal activity. Â Laparoscopic procedures can usually be comfortably performed as outpatient procedures.

Anyone can be at increased risk for cancer based on their family history. This is especially true for certain types of cancers such as: breast, ovary, colon, endometrium (uterine), pancreas, and melanoma. The more unusual the timing of the cancer (early age onset) or prevalence within a family, the higher the risk may be.

The examination can be performed transabdominally, usually with a full bladder to achieve better visualization, or transvaginally with a special vaginal transducer. Dr. Daum, M.D. offers both transabdominal and transvaginal gynecological ultrasound at both offices. Generally transvaginal imaging gives better resolution of the ovaries and fallopian tubes, whereas lesions reaching into the abdomen are better seen transabdominally.Â
