Insects and Spiders

Mites
Sparrows and Starlings are two birds that will make a nest inside a dryers and other exhaust vents, in covered gutters or any place they can get into. This birds can create an unsightly mess with their droppings. Sometimes they can be infested with bird mites, which can sometimes get into a structured space occupied by people.

Bats
There are 8 species of bats in CT. The Big Brown and Little Brown bats are the two most likely to be found in homes and other man made structures.
Moles
Moles, an underground dweller, are found throughout CT. They dig tunnels through lawns. Sometimes just below the surface of the grass when they are searching for food. Deeper tunnels are for giving birth and for protection from heat and frost.

Snakes
Connecticut is home to a variety of different snakes. Of those, only 2 are venomous, the timber rattlesnake and the northern copperhead. Fortunately neither are very common. Snake that are found in or around homes include the gardersnake, ring-neck snake, milk snake, black rat snake, black racer, northern watersnake, and to a lesser extent the hog-nosed snake.
Wildlife
Nuisance Management, owned and operated by Keith J. Ferry, was founded in 2004. Keith is licensed by the State of CT DEEP Wildlife Division, and is a certified nuisance beaver trapper and certified to conduct goose round-ups. He received his business degree from ECSU and is one of only a few nuisance wildlife control professionals to have attended the National Wildlife Damage Management Academy.
Opossums
Woodchucks dig small simple to long complex burrows. An average burrow is about 30 feet long and 2 to 5 feet deep. These burrows have different chambers, one for bedding and raising young and another for a latrine. During the 4 or 5 months of winter, woodchucks will hibernate in their burrows. When abandoned, other animals such as skunks, opossums, and fox will take over these burrows.

The most common are the gray squirrels. They can be found in homes and other structures year round. Early through mid spring and late summer are when most squirrel problems occur. This is when squirrels move into homes to establish a nest, give birth and raise their young.

Chipmunks will make long burrows. Sometimes these burrows will be under decks, patios and sidewalks and can collapse under foot causing serious injury, or around retaining walls and can cause them to fail.
