Crowns
My first visit was amazing. So I've been here almost for approximately 17 years now and I'm still happy. I feel very comfortable in the office. Mostly it's the friendliness of the employees but not just that. I get cold easy when I'm in a stationary position in the dental chair, and they were so sweet to me. They brought me a blanket, made sure I was warm and cozy. And I really appreciate the way the warmth of the staff as well as how they treated me as a patient even though I didn't have a lot of money when I first came here. And my most current treatment was I had six crowns all through the front. I had been in several car accidents. I was in a head-in collision where I chipped a tooth. And the staff worked with me. All the folks I work with, it was like, "Wow, your smile is gorgeous." And that's just a testament to the artistry, the dentistry Dr. Phillips does here. So I don't mind driving from Baton Rouge to Lutcher. It's about a 50-minute drive, but it's so worth it.
Bridges
I would say that crowns are probably the most common dental procedure, other than fillings, that we perform in our office, and they're actually an extremely important way to preserve teeth. Crowns are done by reducing the size of a tooth. What a crown does is that it covers the tooth and protect it. We call them full coverage restorations because we fully cover the entire tooth. The nice thing is, these days, they are beautiful. They're made out of solid porcelain with no metal restorations in them. The statistics say we're supposed to quote plus or minus 20 years, but of course, I've seen crowns last much, much, much longer. There are a lot of misconceptions about the word "bridges" in dentistry. There are some people who consider bridges to be a removable prosthesis, one where you use a bridge to replace missing teeth but it's removable. However, the most common usage today of the term "bridge" is a fixed bridge. It is when you're replacing a missing tooth, you use actually three crowns that are hooked together. You have a missing tooth, and you have a tooth in front of the space and behind the space, and you crown those teeth and have a dummy tooth in the middle. And just like a crown, it's cemented permanently in place and functions like your normal teeth. Today, we have new technology to use a scanner where we basically take photos of the tooth, instead of the impression that we used to take, and we send that to the lab. And these crowns and bridges are then fabricated in the lab, sent back to us, and then placed and cemented permanently into your mouth.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a minimally invasive procedure to enhance the appearance of teeth with minor cosmetic damage. During this treatment, we will apply a special composite to the front surface of teeth to fill in cracks and conceal blemishes. After the composite has been hardened with a special light, we will polish your teeth to achieve a smooth, natural look. In most cases, an entire dental bonding treatment can be completed in one to two hours. Dental bonding is often more affordable than porcelain veneers, although bonded teeth can require touch-ups every several years.
Restorative Dentistry
Over the years, Dr. Phillips has frequently updated his knowledge of cosmetic and restorative dentistry with continuing education courses and memberships in several highly respected dental organizations, including the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and the MISCH International Implant Institute. In addition to his fellowship at the ICOI, Dr. Phillips is also a member of the American Dental Association, the Louisiana Dental Association, and the New Orleans Dental Association.

Root Canal Treatment
Dr. Greg S. Phillips has the training and experience needed to perform 95 percent of root canals in his office without referring patients to a specialist. Periodontal Surgery
One of the most common procedures that we perform in our office is the removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth should normally be removed earlier in your life rather than later, and we normally recommend that if the wisdom teeth are encroaching upon the other teeth and causing space problems, that they be removed very early in life because removal of the wisdom teeth is easier, the healing is quicker, and there's less discomfort post-operatively. So wisdom teeth is one of the most common oral surgery procedures that we perform in our office, and it's something that you absolutely should consider early in life rather than later. One of the biggest innovations in our practice has been in the treatment of periodontal disease or gum disease, as most people know it. Pyorrhea is also another common name. And that has been the advancement of the laser-assisted periodontal treatment. If you look on the web, you'll see many articles about the use of laser in treating periodontal disease and how, in some cases, in many cases, it has replaced the need for periodontal surgery. So this is one of the innovations that we use here in our office is the use of laser to treat periodontal disease.
Deep Cleaning
I would say one of the largest misconceptions in my office is about periodontal or gum treatment. Patients often know periodontal treatment as a deep cleaning. And in many cases they don't understand what a deep cleaning is. Tartar and as we call it calculus forms in the mouth even if you're a good brusher. And of course, that's why you need to go to the dentist is because you cannot once you have a buildup of tartar or calculus, you cannot remove it at home. It has to be removed professionally. Sometimes if you've been away from the dentist for a long time, you can have quite a bit of buildup of tartar and calculus not only above the gums but below the gums. A deep cleaning, or what we call scaling and root planing, is a periodontal therapy. It is used to remove hard deposits from underneath the gums to allow healing of the gums and to decrease inflammation and bleeding. Healthy gums don't bleed.

Dentures
A common problem I see in my office every day are ill-fitting dentures. I think what people don't realize is that wearing dentures for a longer period of time will cause problems that they're not aware of. Once you remove the teeth, the bone supporting your teeth and dentures will tend to melt away. And that can cause dentures to shift and cause sore spots and move around, and it can be a very, very difficult problem and very uncomfortable for the patient. So a great fitting dentures is something that is a huge benefit to a patient and should be evaluated, a new set of dentures probably every five years. One of the most rewarding procedures that I do in the office is the fabrication of dentures, upper and lower dentures and partial dentures.
