Our office phone (502) 589-1500 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Do not hesitate to call because symptoms have occurred at night or over a weekend or a holiday. We prefer that you call us so that we can speak to you and decide when an evaluation should be scheduled. Do not go to an emergency room if you have visual changes. You will wait for hours in the emergency room and will be told that you need to see an eye doctor. Please call us at the onset, so we can determine if you have a problem that needs to be seen and how rapidly that needs to occur.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases of the optic nerve (the nerve that connects the eye to the brain). In glaucoma, the optic nerve becomes progressively damaged, leading to a loss of sight. Untreated glaucoma can lead to blindness.

A cataract is an opacity (cloudiness) which occurs in the lens of the eye. The lens is a natural tissue within the eye that is responsible for focusing light onto the retina. Normally, we are born with crystal clear lenses. Over time, the lens turns yellow due to the natural aging process. This yellowing of the lens helps to protect the retina by filtering harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. In some people, however, the lens becomes excessively cloudy and can impair vision. This can occur at any age. If we live long enough, we will all eventually develop cataracts.

Diabetic Retinopathy
The eye doctor will dilate your eyes so that the retina can be examined for signs of diabetic eye disease. Changes in the retina, such as blood spots, exudates, and cotton-wool spots, are related to the vascular effects of diabetes and are known asnonproliferation diabetic retinopathy. If there are abnormal blood vessels growing on the retina, then proliferative diabetic retinopathy is present, and there is a significant risk for bleeding into the eye. The macula will also be carefully examined to detect any diabetic macular edema which may or may not be causing decreased vision.

At The Eye Care Institute, we charge $800 for LipiFlow. Although Dry Eye Disease is a real condition, Medicare considers LipiFlow to be an elective non-covered, cash-paying service. Commercial insurance carriers generally follow Medicare rules, so this procedure is always considered elective. If you have an HSA or a consumer account with Care Credit, Lipiflow does qualify as a covered service, however. If you are wondering why Medicare doesn’t yet cover LipiFlow, please consider the matter of mammography where Medicare took more than a decade to approve payment coverage of this life saving diagnostic test; unfortunately, sometimes progress happens slowly.

People who live in endemic areas, such as the Ohio-Mississippi River Basin, and were exposed to the histoplasmosis syndrome early in life are at risk for developing ocular histoplasmosis later in life. A person infected with the fungus cannot transmit the disease to another non-infected person because the histoplasmosis organisms die soon after the initial infection. Adults, who move to endemic areas, although they may become infected with the histoplasmosis fungus, usually do not develop the eye disease later in life.
