Sinusitis
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus lining. If the sinus opening becomes swollen shut, normal mucus drainage may not occur, and this may lead to infection and inflammation of the sinuses. Acute sinusitis means that the inflammation has lasted for less than 4 weeks, and chronic sinusitis implies that the inflammation has gone on for longer than a 4 week period of time.

Head and neck cancer includes cancers of the mouth, nose, sinuses, salivary glands, thyroid, throat, skull base, and lymph nodes in the neck. Concerning symptoms include a lump or growth that does not heal, a sore throat or pain that lasts more than 2 weeks, trouble swallowing, a change in the voice or hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, one sided ear pain, or trouble chewing.

Ear Infections
Ear infections are the most common illnesses in babies and young children. Most often, the infection affects the middle ear and is called otitis media. Eustachian tubes connect the middle portion of the ear to the back of the throat. These tubes often stop functioning as a result of an upper respiratory infection (cold or flu). Once this happens, a pressure and subsequent fluid “backup” occurs in the middle ear. This can affect hearing, because sound cannot get through all that fluid.

Thyroid
Thyroid Cancer
Tumors arising from the thyroid gland can be benign or malignant. There is no way to definitively know if a tumor is cancerous or not without removing the involved portion of the gland and checking with a pathologist. Statistically, most tumors are benign. Some diagnostic testing can be done to help decide how to manage these tumors, but surgical removal remains the only definitive way to establish the diagnosis. High risk groups include women, people over the age of 40, those with a family history of thyroid cancer, and patients with a history of radiation exposure. Thyroid cancer is often very indolent, slow growing and treatable with a high cure rate, especially if caught early. Make sure to consult with a physician if you are experiencing a lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a pain in the neck, or hoarseness.

Computed Tomography
The first line of therapies for acute or chronic sinusitis is medical based, and this can include antibiotics, decongestants, pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medicines, topical solutions/irrigations, and anti-allergy medications and treatments. CT scans are an integral part of the evaluation and work-up for sinusitis as it gives a comprehensive view of the sinus anatomy and degree of inflammation. Surgery (Endoscopic Sinus Surgery or ESS) is reserved for sinusitis that persists despite medical therapies and involves opening the sinus cavities to remove infection and help clear inflammation. Balloon Sinuplasty- using a catheter with a balloon to open the sinuses- may also be an option to treat chronic sinusitis in select cases.
Chemotherapy
Using tobacco and/or alcohol increases your risk. In fact, 85 percent of head and neck cancers are linked to tobacco use, including smoking and smokeless tobacco. If found early, these cancers are often curable. Treatments may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination. Treatments can adversely affect eating/swallowing, speaking or even breathing, so patients often need rehabilitation.

Dr. Warren is a board certified Otolaryngologist and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1984. He went on to complete his residency in 1990 from Washington University/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He joined the staff of Boulder Valley Ear, Nose, and Throat in 1990 and served as chief of medical staff at Avista from 1992-1993. In addition, he served as chief of surgery at Boulder Community Hospital from 1998-2002. His special interests include head and neck surgery, treatment of head and neck cancer, and general otolaryngology. Dr. Warren is very close with his family and has three adult children. He likes to spend his free time out of the office on his mountan bike, travelling around the world, and watching his Ohio State Buckeyes dominate college sports.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Andrew Goldman is double board certified in head and neck surgery, as well as in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Goldman graduated with honors from Rush University in Chicago with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1996. Dr. Goldman completed his head and neck surgery residency training in Brooklyn, New York at SUNY-Downstate in 2001, and then trained as a fellow in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the prestigious University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland 2001-2002. He then returned to Brooklyn and served as assistant professor in Facial Plastic Surgery until he moved to Boulder and joined Boulder Valley Ear, Nose & Throat Associates in 2004. Dr. Goldman is founder and Medical Director of Laser and Cosmetic Associates of Boulder, an aesthetic practice that focuses on non-surgical therapies using medical grade lasers and skin care. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Goldman spends time with his wife and kids, and enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. He also is founder of a Boulder based company that makes chocolate based vitamins and supplements called Good Day Chocolate.
