- Established in 1920, the Board of Police Commissioners serves as the head of the Los Angeles Police Department. The board sets policies for the police department and oversees its operations. It works in association with the Chief of Police. The Board of Police Commissioners operates through a staff of several civilians. The board serves as the representative of citizens in police affairs. It implements and recommends a range of reforms. The Board of Police Commissioners also deals with the problems related to employment law, discrimination and sexual harassment. The board initiates and supports a variety of community policing programs. It additionally operates a policy group and grievance unit.
