Christy Guenther was born in Dallas, TX to missionary parents who raised her primarily overseas in Honduras and Spain where she learned to speak fluent Spanish. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Biola University in California before earning her Doctor of Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry. Dr. Guenther then went on to complete a Residency in Primary Care and Specialty Contact Lenses.

Glaucoma
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a safe and effective way to treat glaucoma. The laser works by opening up channels in the trabecular meshwork and utilizing the natural drainage system in the eye. It is an easy procedure done in our office and only takes minutes to do. Recovery time is typically rapid, with little to no discomfort.
Ophthalmology
Joshua Jones, M.D. is a Tyler, TX native and is excited to be back in East Texas. He completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Baylor University, was chosen as a DeBakey Medical Humanities Scholar, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to graduate from medical school and complete his internship year at the McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston, Texas. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, serving as chief resident during his final year. He then finished his subspecialty training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of impaired reading or detailed vision. It is caused by the breakdown of the macula, the central portion of the retina. Although macular degeneration causes distortion of central and color vision, side vision is not affected. Usually, macular degeneration is a natural result of the aging process. Over time, the retinal tissues can break down and become thin. In about 10% of cases of macular degeneration, aging of the retina is made worse by leakage of tiny blood vessels, which nourish the retina.

Eye Exam
To maintain good vision and to keep your eyes healthy, it is important to have routine eye exams. Those with stable vision without any eye disease, having a routine eye exam every two years is important. Your eyes will be dilated at this exam so the doctor can see into your retina checking and screening for eye diseases or disorders. If further testing is required, a more comprehensive exam and possibly more testing will be scheduled.

Medical Conditions. Diabetes increases your risk of developing glaucoma. A history of high blood pressure or heart disease also can increase your risk, as can hypothyroidism.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes is a disease that causes many problems, but it is especially hard on the eyes and can lead to blindness. In fact, diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among adults. About 25% of current diabetics have some form of the disease, and the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy increases with the age of the diabetic person and the duration of the disease. It is estimated that 90% of diabetics may experience some form of diabetic retinopathy over the course of their life.

Ultrasound
Through a micro-incision in your eye, your surgeon will use an ultrasound probe to break up and remove the cloudy, cataract-affected lens.
Radiology
When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers can bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist, or intensivist services. These providers can’t balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed.

As we go through life, even if we have taken care of ourselves, the skin around our eyes stretches and wrinkles. Fatty deposits cause the upper lids to sag while under the eye the tissue can bulge forward and become discolored. In severe cases, vision can become partially blocked. Typically, these unwanted characteristics come with age, beginning in the late 30s and early 40s, but hereditary factors can cause a much younger person to appear prematurely aged. Use of alcohol, smoking and poor diet all accelerate the signs of aging.

Jordan Spindle, M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist with a two-year fellowship in Oculofacial plastic surgery. Dr. Spindle completed his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University and completed medical school at the University of Texas at Houston. He completed an internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, his residency in Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY, and was chosen from a highly competitive field of applicants to train for two years as an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellow at the prestigious UAB Callahan Eye Hospital in Birmingham, AL.

Cosmetic Surgery
As a general rule, insurance does not cover cosmetic surgery. However, if your eyelids are encroaching upon your field of vision, the procedure may be covered as “medically necessary” surgery.
Forehead Lift
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the forehead, brow and area around the eyes to create a more alert, youthful look. A brow lift reduces horizontal wrinkle lines on the forehead, as well as those that occur on the bridge of the nose, between the eyes. A brow lift will also improves frown lines, the vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows. Sagging and drooping brows are elevated in a more alert and youthful position.
