Preventive Care

Dental Care
All dogs, Chihuahua to Great Dane, have 42 teeth in their mouth. Since small dogs obviously have smaller mouths, they tend to have more dental issues than larger dogs. They tend to have more crowding and tartar buildup, so they need more frequent dental cleanings and more home dental care.
Vaccination
All pets boarding at Vintage Heights Veterinary Hospital are required to be currently vaccinated and have a current annual Heartworm Check as well an an annual fecal check. Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella are required for dogs. If your dog is vaccinated at another facility, you must provide documentation from a veterinarian. If you do not provide documentation, you will be charged for required vaccinations and service.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Nutritional Counseling
* Sometimes animals experience stress and separation anxiety, which may cause diarrhea, loss of appetite, and/or sore throat. Owners will be charged for treatment and medications needed for reasons not directly under control.
Comprehensive Examination
Daycare days must be prepaid and scheduled at the time of purchase. No shows or cancellations may not be rescheduled and the fee for that day is forfeited. Daycare services are avaialable Tuesday-Thursday ONLY. To ensure proper care of your pet while in our facility, we require your pet to be a patient of our hospital. All medical services must be performed here. Annual exams by a veterinarian at Vintage Heights are required.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Semi-annual fecal exams are highly recommended to monitor for intestinal parasites. During these exams, we can detect roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia and giardia.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
At VHVH, we start vaccinating kittens at 8 weeks of age for the feline distemper combination vaccine. It is typically recommended to booster the vaccine again at 12 and 16 weeks of age.

We also offer additional options such as nail dremmel to help make your pet’s nails shorter and smoother. Teeth brushing is available to help freshen their breath. We provide the best shampoo option for your pet’s skin and coat. Dry skin, or oily coat, our groomers know what’s best for your pet!
Injury Treatment

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis is a vaccine recommended in this area since this disease can cause serious illnesses. At VHVH, can be included in the Distemper and Parvovirus vaccine we use here. It is recommended to start this vaccine at 12 weeks and booster once 3-4 weeks later.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Parvovirus. Puppies require boosters for the distemper and Parvovirus every 3-4 weeks until 18-20 weeks to maximize their efficacy.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Cats that will be going outdoors unsupervised should be vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia Virus. This vaccine can be given at 9 weeks and needs to be boostered 4 weeks later to be effective. It is recommended to test for Feline Leukemia before initiating this vaccine.
Anal Gland Infection Treatment
We offer “bath & brush” including a nail trim, external anal gland expression and ear cleaning. Our FULL grooming services also include the “bath & brush”, nail trim, external anal gland expressions, ear cleaning, plus the hair cut/style that you request. **internal anal gland expression available upon request for an additional fee**

Your pet will most likely become a surgical candidate multiple times throughout their life, starting with a spay or neuter procedure. Surgical procedures range from standard spays and neuters to dental cleanings, tumor removals, and orthopedic procedures such as cruciate repairs and luxating patella procedures. If your pet’s health would benefit from such procedures, their doctor will be happy to explain any questions or concerns you may have.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Did you know that 4 out of 5 dogs over the age of 3 years have some sort of periodontal disease? It can be caused by the buildup of plaque, so it’s important to go in for regular dental checkups and cleanings.

Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
We will contact you by phone when your pet’s surgery is complete. Your pet will be somewhat groggy after the surgery, but will be awake by the time you pick your pet up. Spay and neuter patients are able to go home the same day after 4:00pm. All orthopedic patients will spend the night and will be released after 10:00am the following day. After the surgery, all patients are checked and offered breakfast. We will contact you first thing in the morning if a complication should occur. You will receive a complete set of instructions on how to care for your pet when you take them home.

In order to diagnose your pet's condition, in additional to your exam, your pet may require sedation, blood work, x-rays, and/or diagnostic testing.

Bordetella, or “Kennel Cough” can be given as early as 7 weeks of age. This vaccine is recommended for dogs that will be around other dogs frequently, such as going to the groomers, boarding facilities, and dog parks. Some facilities, and dog parks. Some facilities require this vaccine to be boostered every 6-12 months for boarding or grooming services.
Senior Pet Care
As your pet ages, differences can be subtle. Although senior pets have special needs, you can help them stay healthy by paying attention to their day-to-day habits and activities. This form will help monitor your senior pet's health and keep track of any changes.

*If your pet is not picked up by close of business, you will be charged full boarding rates. *Vintage Heights Veterinary Hospital screens dogs for temperament, watches the dogs carefully, and does not take seemingly aggressive dogs out with other dogs. Pet daycare can be hazardous due to unfamiliar dogs playing together. It is important that you are aware and understand that there are risks involved with group play, including but not limited to injuries. Does your pet play well off leash with other dogs?

Hi, I’m Dr. Wiedel! I am a class of 2012 graduate from Iowa State University and an associate veterinarian at VHVH. I’ve been working as a small animal veterinarian since graduation and have been employed in the field for 13 years. My career interests include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology. I am a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association, and Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine. I enjoy spending time with my husband, John, and our two dogs, Buddy and Macy, as well as our cat, Bo. In my free time, I like to cycle, garden, and cook.
