Bunion Surgery
Depending on the size of the enlargement, misalignment of the toe, and pain experienced, conservative treatments may not be adequate to prevent progressive damage from bunions. Surgery may be the best solution for your feet. There are a number of different surgical procedures performed for bunions. Our board-certified surgeons will evaluate the severity of your condition and help choose the best procedure for your foot. The good news is most of our patients can walk immediately after surgery. Bunion surgery helps to reduce pain, improve your toe function, and improve the appearance of your feet.

Many people with bunions suffer from discomfort and pain from the constant irritation, rubbing, and friction of the enlargement against shoes. The skin over the toe becomes red and tender. Because this joint flexes with every step, the bigger the bunion gets, the more it hurts to walk. Over time, bursitis or arthritis may set in, the skin on the bottom of the foot may become thicker, and everyday walking may become difficult—all contributing to chronic pain.

“I can truthfully say that without the caring treatment at DM Foot & Ankle Associates, my husband could be dead today. A little over a year ago, my husband developed what looked like a boil under his big toe. Concerned, we went to three podiatrists, as well as an orthopedic surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. All four diagnosed my husband’s issue as an infection. He was prescribed a variety of antibiotics ans salves to apply to his toe. Visually, his wound seemed to get a little better, but quickly returned. My husband, in total frustration, gave up and decided to live with the infection. Due to other foot issues, he searched for a foot doctor in Lemont. Because of God, luck, or good fortune, whatever you want to call it, he came across DMFA and set up an appointment with Dr. Kim. As soon as he took off his shoes, Dr. Kim immediately focused on his foot with the abnormal appearing toe. We explained how it was an infection and expected her to move onto the issue that we had made the appointment for. Instead, with total professionalism and calm, she continued to question us about it and ultimately recommended a biopsy. Two weeks later, we received the news that my husband had nodular melanoma. Without her, my husband may not be here today.

Dr. Emini knew she wanted to be a doctor since the third grade. After being a student volunteer in high school, she had the opportunity to shadow various doctors with differing specialties. Being a foot and ankle physician encompassed many subspecialities such as skin and bone surgery, dermatology, musculoskeletal injuries, and maintaining good foot health in the rising diabetic population. She was intrigued by all the facets that went into the foot and ankle specialty and decided to pursue this as her career.

Poorly fitting shoes are the number one cause of foot injury when it comes to diabetes. Red spots, sores, blisters, corns, calluses, or any persistent pain should be taken seriously, and properly fitting footwear (along with orthotics) should be worn.

In the foot, calluses are typically seen on the heels, balls of the feet, and on the outer side of the big toe. Hammertoes
A bunion is a bone deformity caused by an enlargement of the joint at the base and side of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). Bunions form when the toe moves out of place. The enlargement and its protuberance cause friction and pressure as they rub against footwear. Over time, the movement of the big toe angles in toward the other toes, causing a hammertoe of the second toe as well. The growing enlargement or protuberance then causes more irritation or inflammation.
