At the Swing Shift Bindery, we use centuries-old and traditional methods to bind new books in replicated period styles or to restore books to functional condition. The Bindery prefers the use of natural dyes with additives to make them light fast, as well as other safe emulsions and formulas that will not harm the paper or leather. We do not use PVA or other synthetic glues or pastes; we make our own in such a way as to remain flexible but tenacious. All of our pastes and dyes are 100% natural, and have no modern equivalent. While we do not wash books to remove stains due to the long term effects, we do employ innovative methods to ensure books can be restored to their original functionality. In a market filled with bookbinders, few offer true sewn books in old-world designs and craftsmanship -- the Swing Shift bindery offers just that. Instead of pressing out each paper section of your book, we prefer to use our own method of sewing that allows for the original shape of the spine to be maintained without the need for re-trimming the edges. We can patch and mend paper, leather, cloth, and completely re-bind the book in an appropriate style if needed (this includes new cord for raised-band spines, laced-in boards, hand-sewn silk endbands, blind and gold tooling).
