        Overall

        I just called Oakmont to verify they had the records of my mother's prepaid cremation and burial. I live in Maryland, and the woman I spoke with did not know that it is a state! She'd never heard of it. Then she told me she'd have to "call" for my mother's records. I asked her why she just couldn't find it on the computer. Guess what: no computer, just some old, old spreadsheets! I asked "What if there's a fire?!" This is appalling. When my dad died in 1997 the woman with whom we dealt tried to pull one over on us by charging us for the cremation and burial even though it had been prepaid! She pretended ignorance, but I think this is one of their business methods: to screw the widow and kids by pretending there's no prepaid when their is. I can't find the paperwork, so if I hadn't already known that it is prepaid I could be charged in full for all the "services."

        Another ridiculously funny scene: The rep at the mortuary asked us which cremation urn we would like to buy. Well, it's gonna get buried, and we kind of like the "ashes to ashes" stuff, so we said "Just the simplest, please." The rep retorted:

        "OH, YOU'RE GOING FOR THE CHEAPEST, EH?!"

        We broke up laughing! She should be ashamed of herself. I know truly wealthy people where I live in Washington, D.C. area, and they choose plain old pine coffins. Dust to dust. What a hell of an outfit this mortuary is!
