Insects and Spiders

Ants
Generally large (1/4-1/2 inch) black or brown/red ants that can excavate wood framing, flooring, and solid insulation in homes.
Spiders
In general, eight-legged arachnids. There are an estimated 500 species of spiders in Oregon (according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture), of which only a fraction of them are ever found in and around Oregon homes.
Termites
Founder William Leupitz originally established Silverton Pest and Termite Control in 1974 in Silverton, Oregon. By the early 1980’s his son Mike had taken over family buisness and renamed it—Leupitz Contractors Inc. in 1981—was providing pest management, ‘pest and dry rot’ inspections, and construction repair services to a growing real estate and consumer residential market in the mid-Willamette Valley. Eventually it became necessary to move the center of operations from Silverton to Salem—Oregon’s State Capital—to accommodate the growth.
Bed Bugs
They will continue to multiply and bite. In extreme circumstances, it may be necessary to remove and destroy infested furniture, mattresses, and personal items to eliminate the bed bug scourge in one’s dwelling if infestations are not promptly addressed.

Cockroaches
Fully grown German cockroaches (the most common of cockroaches found in Oregon) are 1/2-5/8-inch long, fast running insects, brown with yellow longitudinal stripes behind their heads. Often found together with smaller “nymph” roaches.
Bees
Predominantly yellow and black scavenger bees, living in large paper nests either underground or in structures, that populate through the spring into fall and can be aggressive when they feel threatened.

In most cases, general spider populations build during the year as flying pests such as flies, mosquitoes, and other insect populations grow. Most spider populations in Oregon peak around September 1 and gradually decrease thereafter until local fall frost conditions set in.

Beetles that either (1) infest wood already in place in a structure, or (2) infest trees or unseasoned timber prior to construction and is subsequently placed in service as solid wood products.
Hornets
Yellow Jackets
If you leave them alone… Worker bees will continue to multiply. When the nest is on one’s own property the population increase can be anything from annoying for outdoor activities to a health hazard for those sensitive or allergic to bee stings. Unlike honeybees, yellow jackets can sting repetitively and cause serious injury. If they are nesting in an attic, they can chew through ceiling sheetrock and gain entry into the home interior.
Aphids
Liometopum occidentale ) have increasing been found infesting homes in the Willamette Valley and Cascade foothills. Typically, they nest in tree stumps and cavities (favoring hardwoods such as oak and poplar) or under stones on the ground. They tend to be found more commonly in areas near streams. When infesting wood, they can mine wood and produce frass much like carpenter ants, only of a finer texture. They typically eat honeydew produced from aphids, but will go after other food sources including other insects and carrion of birds and animals.

Opossums
Prevention & Control It is important for the property resident to prevent or eliminate entry onto the property of other wild animals, such as mice, rats, opossums, and other animals that can carry fleas in. If flea treatment becomes necessary because of interior infestations, a veterinarian or other animal grooming professional must simultaneously treat the pet. Pet bedding should be removed and cleaned or disposed of.

Birds

Rodents
House mice are small-eared, grey 3 1/2 inch rodents (plus another four inches for the tail). They can squeeze through a hole or crack ¼ inch in size (about the size of a dime). They love food, especially seed and cereal products. Excellent climbers. They will easily nest anywhere from attic and subfloor insulation to kitchen and bedroom cabinet drawers and interior upholstered furniture.
Mice
Rattus rattus ), which are smaller and much less common than Norway rats, with tails longer than their bodies, or mice such as house mice or deer mice. Rats are wary of their surroundings and are sensitive to changes in their environment, which can affect the method of eradication.
