Tax Planning

Avoiding Probate
Trusts, legal titling, and beneficiary designations: These tools can help make things go where you want after death while avoiding probate. The last thing many people want is for their estate to get caught up in the courts (i.e., probate). It is important to understand these maneuvers supersede directions in a will. Note: Trusts are not just for the very wealthy.
Roth IRA
Low-income period: Perhaps the most important suggestion I made was to delay their Social Security (SS) income. Not only would this likely increase the amount of SS income throughout their retirement, but it would also provide them with a higher baseline of inflation-adjusted income. However, the biggest benefit would likely come from converting IRAs to Roth IRAs during this period of lower-income and lower tax rates.
Income Tax
At a broad level, we can separate taxes into two categories. The first category is income taxes - the one most people are familiar with. The second category is investment-related taxes. These are taxes on dividends, bond interest, rental income, capital gains, etc. In my experience, investors and investment professionals tend to focus on the former, but ignore the latter. My more holistic approach focuses on both and can achieve a greater degree of tax efficiency.
Tax Deferral
Of course, the above example was contrived to illustrate a point. In most situations, one will hold stocks and stock funds that pay dividends, bonds with taxable interest, and their portfolios will be rebalanced. All of these factors create tax drag when held in a taxable brokerage account, but not within an annuity. The point is that there are two potentially offsetting tax factors at play: the tax deferral during the growth phase and the ultimate tax rate applied to the growth.
Capital Gains Taxes
I proceeded to share some intuition regarding the dividends. In particular, they would just stack up on top of the baseline of fixed income. So this would target a natural and growing stream of income. Et voila! The portfolio did not need to be rebalanced. This would allow the stock portfolio (plus its dividends) to grow unconstrained. It also meant less (or no) rebalancing and fewer capital gains taxes.

Mutual Funds
My building blocks approach to income primarily uses low-cost index funds and direct investments (stocks, bonds, CDs, etc.). To be clear, direct investments involve no fees. Moreover, ETFs and index funds typically have management fees of around 0.05% per year. This makes the overall cost significantly lower than the overpriced mutual funds found in many portfolios.

Annuities
I am a fee-based investment advisor. That means I provide advice to clients in exchange for a fee. I am also licensed for income annuities and life insurance. This means I am a fiduciary in all my dealing with clients and is different from brokers who charge or receive commissions for selling investment securities and operate on a suitability standard.
Long Term Care
Insurance: One solution is to purchase long-term care (LTC) insurance. Unfortunately, LTC insurance prices have increased significantly in recent years.
Asset Management
Asset allocation: Their overall allocations seemed sensible, but there were instances of what I call faux diversification within their portfolio. For example, they had accumulated a variety of funds over the years and some of them basically added up the whole market (e.g., small + medium + large-cap funds = the whole market). So it was more cost-efficient and simpler to replace many of these holdings with a single total market fund.
College Funding
After sitting down with their new advisor, they proceeded to make several new purchases. This included multiple mutual funds, two 529 college savings plans, a variable annuity, and a whole life insurance policy. They also agreed to allocate the bulk of their monthly savings to the mutual funds going forward. Taking this first step toward their financial goals gave them comfort knowing someone was guiding them along the way.
