It’s a well-known fact that oral health impacts a pet’s general health. Simply put, cats and dogs with clean mouths live longer. Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. More than 50% of cats and 80% of dogs over the age of three have some degree of dental disease.

There are a variety of diseases which affect our pets and other animals. This makes proper vaccination vital in protecting them from the many types of illnesses they are susceptible to. It’s important to consult with us about the unique risks of living in our region. Obesity is a common problem among pets, as it can be easy to over-feed a pet that knows how to beg. But being overweight is a serious problem for animals, and can cause real health problems as they get older. With proper diet and exercise, all pets should be able to meet their dietary needs and be within a healthy weight range.
Comprehensive Examination
Our staff will get a chance to talk to you and see if you are having any trouble with your pet. We will also go over diet, preventative medicine, and exercise to ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible. Then, one of our veterinarians will do a complete physical examination on your pet. It is always good to have a baseline in case your pet ever becomes ill. We also want to monitor your pet’s weight, ensuring that your pet stays a healthy weight. It is much easier to start a diet when a pet is a pound overweight instead of fifteen! Our veterinarian will also look for any potential problems. Our goal is to catch any problems before they become major ones. The sooner that we are able to catch a problem, the easier it is to treat it and the more likely that your pet will make a full recovery!

⦁ Changes to stool/urate color and consistency can be a marker for liver disease, kidney disease, malabsorptive/maldigestive gastrointestinal disease, dysbiosis or intestinal parasites, among other things. If you’ve noticed a change, please bring a sample collected over 24-48 hours in order to submit a sufficient quantity for analysis.

Acupuncture has been well-documented to help pets with osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine and neurologic disorders, and a number of chronic conditions. When performed by a trained professional it is safe, relaxing and painless experience for your pet. Treatments at Briar Patch are performed by Ingrid Rhinehart, DVM, CVA who received her certification at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. All of the types of pets we see – dogs, cats and most exotic pets – can receive acupuncture treatments.

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart, which allows your pets’ veterinarian to measure how thick the heart’s muscular walls are, how well the heart contracts, and how well the valves are working. Your pets’ veterinarian can also prescribe the appropriate medications after a successful diagnosis, to keep your pets’ heart as healthy as possible. Some symptoms of diseases of the heart may include exercise intolerance, lethargy, collapse, and difficulty breathing. It is important for your pet to see the veterinarian if your pet has any of these symptoms.

⦁ If you notice your bird consistently holding up a leg or having difficulty perching they should be seen for possible bumble foot, gout or kidney disease.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
The bacteria involved in periodontal disease don’t just stay in the mouth. These organisms invade the blood stream and travel to major organs like the kidneys and heart where they cause significant health issues. Cats and dogs usually need a dental cleaning once yearly. Dental radiographs will help determine the status of oral disease. Regular dental cleanings will also allow your cat or dog to keep their pearly whites in good condition.

Dr. Katherine (Kat) Vissio loves being a part of the vibrant Ithaca community. She graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015, completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at Cornell in 2016, and has completed additional training in soft tissue surgery through the NAVC Institute. She is especially interested surgery and exotics, but also enjoys general and emergency medicine. She believes in individually tailored medicine that works for you and your pet. She is also fluent in Spanish.

But there is a simple, safe, and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should they ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip underneath your pet’s fur. It is a painless and relatively fast procedure, and is completely safe. This microchip is registered with your pet’s vital information, and can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter so that they can return your pet directly to you.
