Medical Weight Loss
Brachioplasty (arm surgery) provides great results for excessively sagging skin after major weight loss or during the aging process. And in most cases, the results are long lasting, if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
Primary Care
Plan to spend about an hour at the office. New patients should arrive ten to fifteen minutes before their scheduled appointment to complete registration paperwork. To see you as quickly as possible, and to enhance your convenience, download and complete our Forms for Initial Consultation in advance. Plan to meet with Dr. Sood and his team for your consultation. They will review your medical history and complete an examination. From there, Dr. Sood will discuss your options, surgical goals and expectations. He will review with you the benefits, risks and potential complications of the selected procedure. Please ask if you have questions as we want you to feel comfortable in making this decision. Please review the information provided on our site that is specific to the procedure you are considering. We can provide you with educational brochures that have clear explanations with pictures that cover details of many procedures. If you decide to proceed, your procedure will be submitted to insurance or you will be sent quotes for cosmetic procedures. Ear Infections
Children with a cleft palate are particularly prone to ear infections because the cleft can interfere with the function of the middle ear. To permit proper drainage and air circulation, the ear-nose-and-throat surgeon on the Cleft Palate Team may recommend that a small plastic ventilation tube be inserted in the eardrum. This relatively minor operation may be done later or at the time of the cleft repair. In addition, surgery may be recommended by your plastic surgeon when your child is older to refine the shape and function of the lip, nose, gums, and palate.
Electrocardiogram
Cosmetic surgical costs are largely based on estimated length of surgery and the complexity of surgery. Fees may vary for different patients because each individual’s surgery has particular issues that may make the surgery or procedure more or less complex. Pre-surgical evaluation, including blood work, EKG, mammogram or chest x-ray, and a medical and/or anesthesia consultation may be required, at an additional cost for cosmetic surgery procedures.

Pregnancy

Endoscopy
If a complication should occur during an endoscopic forehead lift, your surgeon may have to abandon the endoscopic approach and switch to the conventional, open procedure, which will result in a more extensive scar and a longer recovery period. To date, such complications are rare -- estimated at less than 1 percent of all endoscopy procedures.

Ultrasound
There are also points to consider with the newer techniques. For example, in UAL, the heat from the ultrasound device used to liquefy the fat cells may cause injury to the skin or deeper tissues. Also, you should be aware that even though UAL has been performed successfully on several thousand people worldwide, the long-term effects of ultrasound energy on the body are not yet known.
MRI
If a silicone-gel filled implant leaks or breaks, the elastic silicone gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket (a capsule of tissue that surrounds the implant). A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not deflate and may not be noticeable except through imaging techniques such as an MRI. For this reason, a woman with silicone breast implants is advised to visit her plastic surgeon annually to assess that her implants are functioning well. An ultrasound exam or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants; after 3 years it is recommended that all silicone implants be properly screened.
X-Rays
Mammography
Routine mammograms should be continued after breast augmentation for women who are in the appropriate age group, although the mammography technician should use a special technique to assure that you get a reliable reading, as discussed earlier.
Chemotherapy
If the cancer is large, however, or if it has spread to the lymph glands or elsewhere in the body, major surgery may be required. Other possible treat- ments for skin cancer include cryosurgery (freezing the cancer cells), radiation therapy (using x-rays), topical chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs applied to the skin), and Mohs surgery, a special procedure in which the cancer is shaved off one layer at a time. (Mohs surgery is performed only by specially trained physicians and often requires a reconstructive procedure as follow-up.)
Radiation Therapy
No matter what approach is taken, keloids have a stubborn tendency to recur, sometimes even larger than before. To discourage this, the surgeon may combine the scar removal with steroid injections, direct application of steroids during surgery, or radiation therapy. Or you may be asked to wear a pressure garment over the area for as long as a year. Even so, the keloid may return, requiring repeated procedures every few years.

Ear Surgery
Ear surgery is very well tolerated. Complications are very minimal and minor; however please check with Dr. Sood about specific complications associated with this procedure.
Hand Surgery
Dr. Sood's primary interests include cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, cosmetic surgery of the trunk and body, burn reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, and reconstructive surgery after massive weight loss. His background and 14 years of experience at Indiana University bring a unique experience and focus to his reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery practice.

Botox
Clostridia botulina bacteria produce a class of chemical compounds known as “toxins”. The Botulina Type A Toxin (BOTOX) is processed and purified to produce a sterile product suitable for specific therapeutic uses. Once the diluted toxin is injected, it produces a temporary paralysis (chemodenervation) of muscle by preventing transmission of nerve impulses to muscle. The duration of muscle paralysis generally lasts for approximately three to four months.
Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty surgery is customized for every patient, depending on his or her particular needs. It can be performed alone involving upper, lower or both eyelid regions, or in conjunction with other surgical procedures of the eye, face, brow, or nose. In some patients, who have looseness between the lower eyelid and the eyeball, consideration for tightening of the lower eyelid (canthoplasty/canthopexy) at the time of blepharoplasty may be recommended. Eyelid surgery cannot stop the process of aging. It can however, diminish the look of loose skin and bagginess in the eyelid region.
Liposuction
If you're considering liposuction, this brochure will give you a basic understanding of the procedure -- when it can help, how it is performed and how you might look and feel after surgery. It won't answer all of your questions, since much depends on your individual circumstances. Please ask your doctor if there is anything about the procedure you don't understand.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is usually done to balance a difference in breast size, to improve body contour, or as a reconstructive technique following surgery. Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible usually in the breast crease. Breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket for each implant. Dr. Sood places the breast implant beneath the chest wall muscle. After surgery, breasts appear fuller and more natural in tone and contour. Scars will fade with time.
Breast Reduction
After completing his training, Dr. Sood joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana and became a member of University Plastic Surgeons based at the IU School of Medicine. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 1996. He became the Medical Director of the Richard Fairbanks Burn Center in 1992, which is a nationally recognized center for burn care and wound healing. He serves on the Christel DeHaan Foundation Board of Directors, the Peoples Burn Foundation Board of Directors and various hospital committees. He has presented over 100 papers nationally and internationally. He has won numerous awards for his research interests, including his primary research interest of assessing the physiological effects of breast reduction surgery. He has assisted in the production of multiple public service announcements and video tapes intended to assist families and children with burn and fire prevention.
Breast Lift
Over time, a woman's breasts begin to sag and the areolas become larger. All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk. Skin will be removed to reshape the breast with a new position for the nipple. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast its new contour. After surgery, the breasts are higher and firmer, with sutures usually located around the areola, and occasionally below it, and in the crease under the breast. If your expectations are realistic, chances are you'll be satisfied with your breast lift.
Breast Reconstruction
Perforator flaps represent the newest advance in breast reconstruction. These flaps are based on a single blood vessel and do not require removal of a muscle to supply the skin and fat. Microsurgical techniques are required to connect the very small blood vessels of the flap to blood vessels in the axilla or usually ribs. This technique usually takes longer than other techniques. Any woman who is a candidate for tissue reconstruction is a candidate for perforator flap reconstruction. In general, any woman who will require radiation should probably wait at least 6 months following radiation to optimize the cosmetic results. The big drawback of this type of reconstruction is that the results are an all or none phenomenon. The breast reconstruction may fail in 2-5% of all patients due to a variety of reasons including the fragility of the anastamoses which may need to be redone in 20% if all cases. Total loss of the reconstruction may occur in up to 5% of all reconstructions. Potential donor sites for perforator flap breast reconstruction include the abdomen (DIEP), the lower abdomen (SIEA), the superior buttock (SGAP), the inferior buttock (IGAP), and the lateral thigh (ALT.)

Thigh Lift
The best candidates for thigh lift are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by excessive sagging skin on the thighs that won't respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to those who have lost a significant amount of weight and have drooping skin. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved.
Face Lift
A facelift can improve the deep cheek folds, jowls and loose, sagging skin around the neck that come with age. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, follow the natural line in front of the ear, curve behind the earlobe into the crease behind the ear, and into or along the lower scalp. Facial, neck tissue and muscle may be separated; fat may be trimmed or suctioned and underlying muscle may be tightened. After deep tissues are tightened, the excess skin is pulled up and back, trimmed and surured into place. Most of the scars will be hidden within your hair and in the normal creases of your skin. After surgery, you'll present a fresher, more youthful face to the world.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and muscle from both the upper and lower eyelids. Underlying fatty tissue that produces bagginess can be selectively removed or repositioned. Blepharoplasty can improve drooping skin and bagginess. It can help improve vision in older patients who have hooding of their upper eyelids. Although it can add an upper eyelid crease to the Asian eyelid, it will not erase evidence of one’s racial or ethnic heritage. Blepharoplasty will not remove “crow’s feet” or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
Abdominoplasty
An incision just above the pubic area is used to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall all the way up to the ribs. The surgeon draws underlying muscle and tissue together and stitches them, thereby narrowing the waistline and strengthening the abdominal wall. Abdominal skin is drawn down and excess is removed. With complete abdominoplasty, a new opening is cut for the navel. Both incisions are stitched closed. After surgery, the patient has a flatter, trimmer abdomen. Scars are permanent, but will fade with time.

Breast Surgery
Breast implants do not generally interfere with a woman's ability to breast feed, or present a health hazard during pregnancy to a woman or her baby. However, pregnancy and the associated changes to a woman's body may alter the results of any breast surgery, including surgery to place breast implants. Therefore, it is important to discuss the options of breast implant surgery with your plastic surgeon if you are interested in becoming pregnant and breast feeding in the future.
Otoplasty
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a surgical process to reshape the ear, and to set prominent ears back closer to the head. A variety of different techniques and approaches may be used to reshape congenital prominence in the ears or to restore damaged ears. Each individual seeking otoplasty is unique both in terms of the appearance of their ears and expectations for results following otoplasty surgery. It is important that you fully discuss your expectations with Dr. Sood prior to surgery.
Scar Revision
If you're considering scar revision, this will give you a basic understanding of the most common types of scars, the procedures used to treat them, and the results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask your doctor if there is anything about the procedure you don't understand.
Body Contouring
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that is used to help remove the excess skin and fatty tissue from the underside of the upper arm, extending from the underarm to the elbow. Brachioplasty is not a surgical treatment for being overweight. Obese individuals who intend to lose weight should postpone all forms of body-contouring surgery until they have reached a stable weight and maintained for one year.
Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for women-like breasts. Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Sood’s primary goal is to provide excellent clinical results along with a high level of patient care and service. It is important that every cosmetic surgery patient evaluated understand that cosmetic surgery is something you “want” not something you “need.” We want to ensure that all patients understand the risks and potential complications of reconstructive, emergent, and elective surgery. We will determine each patient’s treatment based on their particular need.
Dermabrasion
Some facial scars can be softened using a technique called dermabrasion, a controlled scraping of the top layers of the skin using a hand-held, high-speed rotary wheel. Dermabrasion leaves a smoother surface to the skin, but it won't completely erase the scar.
Bariatric Surgery
After gastric bypass or bariatric surgery, previously obese patients can lose 100 pounds or more. While this has major health benefits and reduces other problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure, it can also create unpleasant body shapes because the body is now smaller than its skin. While some skin shrinkage will occur, you may want to consider a body contouring surgery to reduce excess fat and skin. This can also help you further improve your self-image as a major step in your transformation.
Forehead Lift
A forehead lift can smooth the forehead, raise the upper eyelids, and minimize the frown lines that come with aging. In preparation for a forehead lift, the hair is tied back with rubber bands in front of and behind the incision area. An incision is usually made across the top of the head, just behind the hairline. Forehead skin is gently lifted and portions of facial muscle and excess skin are removed. The incision is then closed with stitches or clips. The result of a forehead lift is a younger, more rested look.

Skin Cancer
Basal cell carcinoma may come in many forms. It often begins as a small, pearly nodule. Squamous cell carsinoma may begin as a red, scaly patch, a group of crusted nodules, or a sore that doesn't heal. Malignant melanoma is often asymmetrical, with blurred or ragged edges and mottled colors. Small skin cancers can often be excised quickly and easily in the physician's office. Simple excision usually leaves a thin barely visible scar. A bone/soft tissue flap is used to reconstruct the nose following skin cancer excision. The incision lines of the flap are hidden within the natural creases of the nose and face.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels improve skin texture, tighten pores and minimize wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, hydrated face with a healthy glow.

Physical Therapy
Correcting a contracture usually involves cutting out the scar and replacing it with a skin graft or a flap. In some cases a procedure known as Z-plasty may be used. And new techniques, such as tissue expansion, are playing an increasingly important role. If the contracture has existed for some time, you may need physical therapy after surgery to restore full function.
