        Downey Avenue is an open-minded, inter-generational congregation in Irvington with a shared commitment to work for social justice, care for creation, and celebrate the rich diversity of Gods’ people. Our shared mission is to be “Transformed by God’s radical love to build a welcoming church, a just community, and a sustainable world.” As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we welcome people of all beliefs and backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, political preferences, or religious beliefs — focusing instead on what brings us together: the infinite love of God for all people. Serving the Irvington community since 1875, Downey has continually found new ways to respond to a witness of social justice and compassion in our community and around the world.

        Today was my first service, We are new to the area and are exploring churches to find our perfect fit. I don't know if it is . BUT it is the first I have taken the time to review. We were whole heartedly welcomed from the moment we walked in the door. To the moment we left. The bible study we sat in on was a older crowd than ourselves but I almost wanted to cry at how opened minded and forward thinking they are but with LOTS of wisdom. They spoke of what it means to be a real Christian. How the churches are suppose to be. Open and loving, They spoke of the jail systems and how damaging they are to society and young adults and how they need a better program in place. Their Choir was a mix of ages and sang so beautifully. And the Pastor , he gave one of the best sermons I have witnesses yet here in the area. And this church values the youth it really shines through.. They do A food pantry and they are community focused. I HIGHLY recommend this church.. I feel very blessed that we got to visit today.
