Ear Infections
Dr. Neeta Kohli-Dang has had a successful and busy practice for several years with vast experience in the treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders, both pediatric and adult. She is particularly interested in treating conditions such as ear infections, dizziness, nasal obstruction, sinusitis, nasal drainage, thyroid nodules, hoarseness, and difficulty swallowing. She uses the latest techniques including computer-guided surgery, ClariFix, RhinAer, VivAer, Eustachian tube dilation, and Balloon Sinuplasty.

DR. PAUL DANG was born in London, England but grew up in Toronto, Canada. He completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, where he also received his medical degree and met his match and the love of his life, Neeta Kohli. He then completed his residency training in Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and is Board Certified. Along with his wife and their three children, Paul moved to the United States in 1996 where his fourth child was born.

Stress Management
Management starts with prevention. Because prolonged noise exposure can be associated with tinnitus and hearing loss, hearing protection around firearms and loud machinery is crucial. Avoiding ototoxic medications when possible is important. Next, we treat any underlying condition (Meniere’s disease, middle ear infection, or medication side-effects to name a few). Hearing aids and masking devices can be helpful for some. Psychological support in the form of tinnitus retraining therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relaxation techniques such as biofeedback are often successful. White noise machines and apps that produce simulated environmental sounds such as falling rain or ocean waves are often helpful. Sufferers of tinnitus are advised to avoid possible irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Also try covering the noise with a fan, soft music, or low-volume radio static when in quiet environments. Stress management, as with many conditions, is critical. Medications and supplements can also work for some tinnitus sufferers although general consensus in the ENT community is that there is no “magic pill” to fix tinnitus.

I came to Dr. Dang when it was determined I had thyroid cancer and needed a full thyroidectomy. She was so caring and patient with all my concerns and questions and her surgical expertise was amazing! Others who have had this surgery have quite a scar & I can barely see my scar – She was very thorough in her medical care and explained everything so well and did a fantastic job – I haven’t had any complications and highly recommend Dr. Dang to others – Her staff has also been great to work with!

General Surgery
Dr. John LaFrentz has been a physician with Huntsville Ear, Nose, and Throat Physicians since 2003. He received a Bachelor of Science with Honors from the University of Florida in 1990. After earning his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1994, Dr. LaFrentz completed a general surgery internship at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. His residency training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery was performed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the United States Army distinguishing himself as recipient of the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal.
Neurosurgery
After graduating residency, Dr. Dang remained in academic medicine at Washington University. During his academic career, he was a prolific clinician, surgeon, and teacher of residents. He also has given several lectures to ENT residents, as well as to residents from other departments. For instance, he taught a cadaveric dissection course to neurosurgery residents demonstrating sinonasal anatomy for skull base surgery.
Otolaryngology
Dr. Neeta Kohli-Dang completed her undergraduate and medical training at the University of Toronto from where she graduated with honors. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto, including the world famous Hospital for Sick Children, which provided extensive pediatric training. She is board-certified in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Lesions
Two bands of muscles constitute the vocal cords. They vibrate to create sound arising from the larynx. Hoarseness can arise from various etiologies. Excessive voice abuse such as talking too much, screaming, or repeated throat clearing can create irritant laryngitis with thickening along the edges of the true vocal cords (callouses of the vocal fold). These may occur on both sides of the vocal cords facing each other and leading to poor approximation of the free edges. The condition may progress to a nodule or polyp. Symptoms of vocal cord lesions include vocal fatigue, low-pitch gravely voice, breathy voice, inability to sing high notes, rough voice quality, frequent throat clearing, and voice breaks. Treatment usually constitutes speech therapy and video stroboscopy. Further options include removal of the nodule or polyp under general anesthesia if there is no significant improvement with medical treatment. Other causes of hoarseness include an upper respiratory tract infection with irritant laryngitis. Reflux can also irritate the larynx and contribute to hoarseness. Sometimes a tumor may develop over the vocal cords especially in smokers. Paralysis of the vocal cord can occur following and upper respiratory tract infection, surgery, trauma, or cancer within the neck or chest.
