These days it seems like Americans are crazed about including protein in their diets, and many of the most popular diet or weight loss tips suggest increasing protein intake. However, a recent study shows that nearly half of older Americans (age 50 and older) are not consuming enough protein. Emergency Care
Acute tendon ruptures usually occur on the tennis, racquetball, or squash court. The player typically feels a “pop” in the calf and swears someone just whacked him with a ball or racquet. Often, they can still walk with difficulty. These injuries need to be addressed expeditiously for a good outcome. Unfortunately, 10-20% of acute achilles ruptures are misdiagnosed as a “sprain” in ER’s and urgent care centers an X-Ray’s show normal bones and patients are not fully examined. Delayed diagnosis of acute ruptures leads to more involved surgeries and less favorable permanent outcomes.

The condition was named after a Swiss surgeon Fritz de Quervain, who incidentally, was famous for his work on thyroid disease and the public introduction of iodine into table salt decreasing the incidence of “goiters” (swollen thyroid glands) in Switzerland. The U.S. adopted this policy in the 1920s starting in the iodine deficient Midwest where goiters affected 20-30% of the population.

Ultrasound
On the day of your appointment, a sample of your blood will be obtained. The blood will then be processed on site to create the PRP using the platelet enrichment activation process. While the PRP is being created, the area of your injury will be visualized using ultrasound and prepared to accept the PRP. For some conditions, a nerve block may be administered to reduce patients discomfort during the procedure. Using ultrasound guidance, we will direct a needle to the affected area to break up scar tissue and adhesions and stimulate a healing response. Following this the PRP will be placed directly to the treated area.

Ms. Buchanan was formerly a secretary for the Emergency Department at Huntington Hospital. Upon retirement she joined Dr. Moriarty. Now in her 16th year with our practice Ms. Buchanan is charged with the tasks of obtaining authorizations for outside testing such as MRI and viscosupplementation just to name a few. She is also responsible for our medical records requests as well as general office duties.

Visco Supplementation acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads this treatment has been shown to relieve pain in many patients who cannot get relief from no medicinal measures or analgesic drugs. This can also be an option in patients hoping to joint replacement surgery.
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedist Dr. Moriarty was educated at Boston College, graduating summa cum laude and elected Phi Beta Kappa for academic excellence. His medical training followed at State University of New York where he achieved honors in medicine and surgery. Dr. Moriarty participated in a surgical internship at North Shore University Hospital, followed by a four (4) year orthopedic residency at the State University of New York where he coauthored several publications and authored a chapter in an orthopedic textbook. He received board certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the NYS Orthopedic Association, a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Moriarty is a former high school and Divison I college athlete who remains active in sports.
