  • Carne asada to die for!
    by  on 04/04/2012

I've known Tila for over 20 years and have always enjoyed the presentation of her entrees almost as much as tasting them. If you've never been to Tila's, I recommend her carne asada with creamed spinach and roasted potatoes. It is quite phenomenal. In fact, I can't even think of the appropriate adjective to describe the juiciest, most flavorful meal I have ever had. Oh, by the way, order it with the garlic sauce! Guess where I'm going after I send this comment?!! Yep!

  • Great experience at Tila's
    by  on 02/28/2012

I love Tila's unique spin on mexican food. Their food is always fresh & flavorful. I especially love their ceviche, gazpacho & stuffed avocado. Their margaritas are some of the best in the city...using fresh lime juice. Their warm salsa is to die for! We will be returning soon!

Will never go back.\r My fiance and I went on a Friday for Lunch. We had driven by a few times and thought it looked interesting. \r \r I have eaten every level of Mexican food and not only was the food not interesting, but how do you mess up Poblano stuffed with Mango... you add some kind of gritty /chewy/bland ingrediant that is unidentifiable. The creamed spinach had so much cheese (and I think it was Kraft Slices) there was no other taste. And to make it worse we really overpaid for the lack of quality. \r \r Now the Waiter, who we rarely saw, could not even work the credit card machine. We never got water refils. and then t took him 26 minutes to run the credit card and had to finally have the other waiter run it. we had no idea why he was walking outside and waiting on other customers when he had taken my fiance's card back. \r \r Seriously I think only the Valet had any skills to perform their job.

Being a Texan, I have eaten my fair share of Mexican, Tex-Mex, Latin Inspired, whatever you want to call it type food.\r \r I found Tila's through Citysearch and went for a co-worker's birthday lunch. We work in the Galleria area, so the location was convenient. They accommodated eight (8) of us no problems about 12:15 on a Thursday. It was great not to see a (gazillion) people in a lunch spot which is what Galleria area workers are used to when they go out for lunch.\r \r The service was not bad. The food was acceptable. I do however think the value of what we got for the money was insufficient. (Paying extra for more chips is non-sense --- sure whether you see it on the bill or not you are paying for it any way, but it was the thought of an extra charge.) $159 (before tip) spread over eight (8) is not bad, but more than I expected, and more than I feel we got. \r \r Doubt I'll go back, but I did hear their margaritas are decent so I may have to give them another shot in the evening. Besides margaritas make everything better.

  • Terrible Service!
    by  on 05/21/2010

I went to Tila's with a group of friends for a birthday party, and we enjoyed ourselves throughout the whole meal. However, after we finished eating our cake that we had brought ourselves, the manager came to the birthday girl with her check and told her that he was charging her $15 for bringing her own cake. Although both he and the waiter had seen us passing out plates and taking out the cake, he did not warn us earlier or give us any inkling that their restaurant policy did not allow for their customers to bring their own cake. He told us that it was our own faults for not telling them earlier that we were bringing a cake to our birthday party that we had made reservations for.\r \r I understand how they had a policy to not bring our own food, but they did not mention it to us at all and they only told us at the very end after we were done eating, singing, opening presents, etc. They were extremely rude about it and, even though they said they would take the $15 off, they did not. The birthday girl tried to speak to Tila herself because she had been emailing her back and forth for the past week, but the waiter just very rudely said ""no"". It wasn't even the money that was the problem but the principle of the whole matter.\r \r I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! Although the food was alright, the customer service here is just so terrible. I can not get over how rude the waiter and, especially the manager, were. What ever happened to ""the customer is always right""?

  • a night(mare) out for dinner
    by  on 05/21/2010

A group of friends and I (in total 11 people) visited Tila's yesterday (Thursday evening). It was a birthday celebration that had been arranged between the birthday girl and Tila on the phone. We had reservations and were promptly seated. Dinner was ordered and served correctly and the food was okay. It is nothing special that will have you leaving wanting more. Well, the portions were small so you may want more. My friend brought a birthday cake and her own plates that we picked up for a few bucks from the grocery store. We served the cake and ate it. Please keep in mind the waiter did see you serve the cake, sing happy birthday and everything. So, the staff of Tila's then brings out a HORRIBLE raspberry flavored cake for the birthday girl. We sat there and opened gifts...then the checks came. The bills ranged from $14-$25, which was expected. What we didn't expect was the shocking move that the restaurant manager and our waiter did next. They served the birthday girl two bills. One for her meal, the next for the birthday cake we brought. $15 DOLLARS!! This is not a joke. No where on their menu, website or during the dinner did it say anything about a fee for bringing your own cake. The manager compared us bringing the 5 dollar cake to bringing your own bottle of wine to a restaurant (mind you we are all under 20), or bringing your own food to a restaurant. First of all, we were never informed or even warned during dinner of the potential fee. I am just shocked. My friend and I began to question the manager and he was the absolute rudest man i have ever met!!!!! He treated us terribly. I believe it was because we were teenagers. I will never go back to this restaurant. They claim they base their restaurant on a family atmosphere. NO! I recommend finding a nice up scale restaurant where customer service comes first, then making money. We paid the $15, after the manager told me he would take it off. He failed to comply. Tila, the restaurant owner was not in, but she will be recieveing a phone call! I hate that my friend's birthday dinner had to end the way it did. DO NOT GO TO TILA'S!

  • Tila's is Best in Houston
    by  on 04/16/2010

What can I say? Every time I have been to Tila's it has been fantastic. The menu has a great authentic feel with a wide variety of flavors and foods for everyone. From the first time I have been over 8 years ago till now it has been amazing. Starting of from the time you arrive until the time you leave the service is great! You will enjoy the atmosphere outside on cool summer nights with the small chimeneas to the blankets and heaters available. Also, the tequila list is long and has a wide variety, which makes a great option for their margaritas. One thing that really captured me was the fried plantains tucked away in the bucket of thin, crispy chips cooked to perfection. The red and green sauces for dipping are mucho delicioso, but I prefer the red over the green because it is spicy. The owner is great as well! She will come by and talk to you, make some great recommendations for what you like and help match with a great margarita. The food is simply divine and as i said covers a wide variety, which I love. I have been there many weeks and I feel like I am becoming a regular to one of the best places in Houston. I cant wait to go back and have some of their tres leches, or Tila-Misu!!! Forget about the traditional Tex-Mex and take a break from the Houston hustle and bustle and escape with a nice Margarita to Tila's right off of Shepherd and Memorial!
