Overall

Don't go there

My wife had a back pain so we went to Clear Lake Er

They gave her some drugs for the pain and a CT to check her back

She had a Kidney stone.

They would not let me take her to the Hospital because they had started an IV.

They called an Ambulance service and arranged for a room at a local hospital.

Two days in the hospital and my wife was fine.

Then the bills

Almost seven thousand dollars from Clear Lake Er

An additional fifteen hundred for the Ambulance.

An additional five hundred for the company that actually made the call to get the room at the hospital

An additional six hundred from the doctor at Clear Lake Er

All together we were billed almost nine thousand five hundred dollars for 2 hours at Clear Lake Er.

The Hospital charged seventeen hundred for 2 days.

I repeat - Don't go there.

Pure Ripoff

I spoke with your wife this week; she was treated very quickly and appropriately and was very satisfied with the treatment she received at our facility. The fact that such an extensive workup and treatment for such a serious condition was able to be completed in only two hours is a testament to the excellent service we offer. A hospital ER might have taken 6-8 hours for the same treatment at the same cost. The bills you mention do not consider your discounts. For example, your insurance discount reduced the physician bill from $600 to $200. I have also adjusted the facility charges which greatly reduced your financial responsibility, and your wife seemed satisfied with that arrangement. We have no control over ambulance charges or hospital charges, you will need to contact each provider directly to discuss those bills. State law requires us to transfer patients to the hospital by ambulance...you were notified of this fact and agreed to the transfer. Your wife was seriously ill and very uncomfortable, requiring extensive testing and several rounds of IV medications. I'm glad she made a full recovery and hope I have addressed your concerns.

Overall

Last Wednesday, I came down with the flu (confirmed by a test) and was told to take my 2.5yr old son into an emergency care place if he began to show symptoms, so that he could be treated immediately.

On Thursday, My MIL, who was watching him, said that he had a thick cough and runny nose, so she was going to take him in.

The doctor at Emergi Care REFUSED to give my son the nasal swab for the flu, bc he said that my son didn't have "enough" symptoms.

He then proceeded to lecture my husband about whether or not our son had a regular pediatrician (yes, and we couldn't get in quick enough), why we didn't take him there (see previous reason), and then insisted that the first side effect of the flu is sore muscles (mine wasn't, mine was a cough)... so he asked my 2.5yr old if his muscles hurt. WTF?! He asked a TODDLER if his muscles hurt?! Then based on my toddler's answer, determined that a flu test wasn't necessary.

The VERY NEXT AFTERNOON my son came down with a fever, chills, and was up most of the night sweating. Thanks to the lovely charge the day before, we could not afford to take my son to another emergency care facility and couldn't get into our own pediatrician, so we were forced to treat my son with Tylenol all weekend, and wait for the Tuesday morning appt to our pediatrician's office.

Today, we finally got in to see the pediatrician, and surprise surprise, my son has the flu, BUT now that he has had symptoms for 5 days... it's too late to treat with medication, and we get to "ride it out".

To add insult to injury, I got onto mine and my husband's bank account to find out the name of this place to call and complain... and was welcomed with the news that they charged us for the FULL ER visit copay. DOUBLE the amount of our urgent care copay.

I have a call into the administrator, and am waiting to hear from him. However, no matter the outcome, I will never EVER recommend a medical facility that questions why you are there to see them, and makes you feel like a horrible parent for trying to have your child taken care of.

Congratulations Emergi Care. You got to keep that ONE cotton swab and allowed my toddler to suffer for a whole weekend.

I have discussed your complaint with the physician who treated your son. Since your toddler ultimately came down with the flu, he was unfortunately going to suffer through the weekend whether he was treated or not. The treatment for influenza only decreases the symptoms by about one day (from 7 days to 6 days). As I discussed with you over the phone, testing for influenza is not indicated in patients without fever; if you had called us the next day after he developed the fever, we would have gladly seen your son again free of charge or called in a medication for him. We are licensed as a freestanding ER not an urgent care clinic, so we do charge an ER copay. I did refund half of your copay for your inconvenience. I'm glad your son made a full recovery, and wish you both the best.

Short story? I'd go with UNET...

Short story? I'd go with UNETHICAL billing practices.

Long story? The staff was great, they take your insurance, They patch you up promtly. Wonderful doctors, wonderful facitlites (seriously, up to here we are 5 stars people). Then you get the $$$$ bill. They won't itimize the charges, so your insurance pays an "office visit", upon apeal, your insurance company says they charged you 10 times the "Reasonable and Customary Rate." 10 times, not double or triple, but TEN TIMES the resonable rate. Clear Lake ER refuses to return your phone calls. then turns you over to collections. So when they tell you "we take most insurance" what they mean is they are out of network on most insurance, but they'll take your money!!!!

I appreciate your 5 star recommendation of our doctors and our facility. Our charges are comparable to other freestanding ERs and hospital ERs in the area. We have contractual agreements with several insurers. There are a variety of different insurance plans, some of which are better than others. Your insurer's allegation that our charges are higher than the reasonable and customary rate is simply not correct. I would be delighted to personally discuss any billing issues with you. Please contact Dr. James Jackson at 281-461-1111.

Totally incompetent staff: Sai...

Totally incompetent staff: Said could not verify insurance on Saturday. After showing her

How to verify. We left and went somewhere else and it took them three seconds to

Verify . She said this was a problem with United HealthCare? The problem was her. Hope their doctors are better trained. This place needs to be closed. What if someone

Had a life threating need. I guess you would just die, since Ms Clueless did not know

How to use their system.

I'm sorry we weren't able to verify your insurance, but we would have seen you regardless. We verify insurance as a courtesy to our patients, not as a condition of being seen We would have seen you if you had no insurance at all if you would have given us a chance. There are many reasons why the electronic verification system might not work at all times of the day, but I assure you incompetent staff is not one of them. We do it all day long. The problem usually is on the insurer's end of the computer connection, and it is usually a temporary issue as you discovered.
