Founded in 1967 at the University of Hawaii, the Institute for Astronomy conducts research related to stars, planets and galaxies. The institute is one of the world's leading astronomical research centers. It manages Haleakala and Mauna Kea observatories, as well as operates a variety of academic programs. The Institute for Astronomy offers a range of introductory courses to more than 700 undergraduate students in a year. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in astrobiology, astronomy, cosmology and technology. The institute holds workshops in the islands of Oahu and Maui in Hawaii. It operates the Advanced Technology Research Center (ATRC), which is an over 15,000-square-foot facility that includes a laboratory workspace for microfabrication, advanced metrology and optical sensor development. The institute provides scientific instrumentation services to Gemini Observatory and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.
