The implant itself, often made of titanium, is used like an artificial root to support the false tooth or teeth. The dental surgeon, usually a periodontist (gum specialist) or an oral surgeon, places the implant into a hole made in the jawbone. A post can then be secured to this “artificial root” and can be used to secure a prosthetic device, such as a crown or bridge, above the gum. A number of conditions may require oral surgery, including wisdom teeth, tooth loss,and jaw related problems. Wisdom teeth, otherwise known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop. Sometimes these teeth emerge from the gum line and the jaw is large enough to allow room for them, but most of the time, this is not the case. More often, one or more of these third molars fails to emerge in proper alignment or fails to fully emerge through the gum line and becomes entrapped or "impacted" between the jawbone and the gum tissue. Jaw Surgery
Special interests of Dr. Carr’s include advanced bone grafting and dental implant surgery, sedation and general anesthesia, third molar removal, sleep apnea surgery and orthognathic surgery. Doctor Carr is active in research and focuses on sedation and general anesthesia. Some of his research has translated into his current anesthetic technique to ensure that patients are safely and predictably sedated to an optimal level.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. McBride has been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery in the San Benito County area for the past twenty years. He received his dental degree from the University of California at San Francisco. His post-graduate residency was completed at the same institution. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF. Dr. McBride also sits on the board of directors of the Monterey Bay Dental Society. He enjoys all facets of the practice of this specialty.
Tooth Extractions
Local Anesthesia is the anesthesia known to you from your family dentist. After placing a topical anesthetic on the injection site, a local anesthetic (usually lidocaine--novocaine is no longer used) is injected to numb the surgical area. You can eat before the surgery if only local anesthesia will be used. Local anesthesia is advised for simple extraction but not for complex or surgery of impacted teeth. During the surgery you will feel pressure, but you experience no pain.

A: There is a remote possibility that the implant and bone will not attach correctly. If this happens, the implant can be removed easily and may even be replaced by another implant that is successful. Low success rates were seen in smokers and patients with extensive bone grafting.
