Smoking Cessation
Most healthy women who wish to achieve or restore harmony to their appearance can be good candidates for breast asymmetry correction. This treatment is not a singular procedure, such as breast augmentation; it is a treatment protocol that is tailored to the individual. Patients should be in good health and should not smoke. If you are interested in plastic surgery to improve the appearance of your breasts and you smoke, now is a good time to quit. The more time between smoking cessation and your surgery, the better equipped your body will be to heal properly.

Pregnancy
Labor and Delivery
For most women, childbirth is a wonderful, life-changing event. It represents the culmination of a dramatic body transformation, which occurred over the proceeding nine months. In some situations, return to pre-motherhood figure occurs over the 3 to 6 months following delivery. However, many women express frustration and dissatisfaction when they’re unable to recover their prepregnancy shape, despite appropriate diet and exercise. This is especially common for women who’ve delivered their second or subsequent child. Invariably, these permanent, unwanted changes prominently involve the breast and/or abdominal/torso areas. Typical post-pregnancy breast changes include loss of volume (or a ‘deflated’ breast appearance) along with possible descent or drop in position, known as ‘ptosis.’ Similarly, the abdominal distention associated with later pregnancy stages may leave a lingering crepey skin laxity, multiple stretch marks, belly button hernia, muscle weakness or residual pockets of fatty tissue fullness. It’s precisely this combination of body changes that ‘Mommy makeovers’ are designed to correct.

Depression

Ultrasound
Comfortably performed in an office setting, Liposonix® is a completely non-surgical treatment that employs high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to permanently destroy unwanted fat cells, leaving the overlying skin unharmed. The products of fat cell breakdown are then naturally cleared by your body, leaving you with a thinner, improved waistline, or another contour. Mammography
Significant advances have been made in the management of breast cancer over the last 20 years. Improvements in diagnostic techniques and protocols have resulted in progressively earlier detection of breast cancer, which is the most important factor mitigating towards effective treatment and potential cure. Women who carefully follow recommendations for regular breast self exams, periodic breast exams by their gynecologist or family physician and routine screening mammography, benefit from potential diagnosis of early or ‘minimal’ breast cancer and are then eligible for breast conservation treatment. However, for those less fortunate women whose breast cancer is more advanced at the time of initial diagnosis or for whom breast conservation treatment is not appropriate, a modified radical mastectomy may be the optimal treatment. In these situations, post-mastectomy breast reconstruction may represent an excellent therapueutic option.
Chemotherapy
Delayed post-mastectomy breast reconstruction’ ). When performed as an immediate post-mastectomy procedure, patients benefit from the preservation of a greater variety of treatment options and may be eligible for a ‘skin sparing mastectomy’. Following breast mound reconstruction and the completion of any additional necessary breast cancer treatments, such as radiation and/or chemotherapy, patients complete their breast reconstruction in several additional stages including a possible ‘balancing’ procedure on the opposite breast, nipple reconstruction and nipple/areolar tattooing. Due to the many factors affecting the choices in breast reconstruction as well as the variety of reconstructive techniques available, it is not possible to appropriately outline them all in this forum.

General Surgery
I recently had the privilege to participate in a two-week surgical charitable mission trip to Liberia, West Africa in March 2019 with an organization called HEARTT (Health, Education, Aid and Research through Training). During this trip, I was accompanied by a nurse and team of other surgeons, one of whom was my son, Dr. Robert M. Kimmel, Jr., a senior General Surgery resident at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut. During this mission trip, we were able to provide necessary surgeries to impoverished citizens of Liberia, who lack the resources to otherwise afford access to surgical care, as well as provide teaching and interaction opportunities between HEARTT members and the Liberian medical professionals. Additionally, having the opportunity to work side-by-side and share this experience with my son was extremely rewarding. The lack of resources and meager conditions forced our team to be both flexible and resourceful and definitely made me appreciate the standard of medical care we enjoy in the US.
Wound Care
Dermabrasion is a procedure employed to enhance the skin surface by improving or eliminating contour irregularities. Performed on as outpatient basis, using a local anesthetic in combination with intravenous sedation,State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’ ) Dermabrasion involves the use of a power skin dermabrader or “sanding wheel” device to gently strip away excess unwanted skin cells, thereby improving deep or concentrated wrinkles, chronic acne scarring or skin surface irregularities resulting from prior injury. Dermabrasion is particularly useful for correcting contour irregularities in the area of the cheeks and around the mouth. Following this procedure, a “brush-burn” type of wound results, requiring topical wound care for about 5-7 days until surface healing occurs. What emerges following this healing process is an enhanced, smoother skin contour and more radiant complexion. This improvement in facial skin contour can, in turn, minimize the need for the use of camouflage cosmetics in women or the embarrassment resulting from chronic acne scarring, thereby enhancing confidence and self esteem.
Ear Surgery
Otoplasty or ear surgery involves “pinning back” or reshaping protruding ears so they are in the proper proportion and position with respect to the size and shape of the face and head, without altering hearing ability. This surgery can be performed at any age as long as the ears have reached their full size, usually beginning about 5 to 6 years of age. Having this procedure performed at a young age is advantageous in several respects: the cartilage is extremely pliable, thereby permitting greater ease of shaping; secondly, the child will experience psychological benefits from the cosmetic improvement. Additionally, when performed in childhood, otoplasty may represent a ‘covered benefit’ in some health insurance plans. Through an incision concealed behind the ear which heals imperceptibly, otoplasty is most commonly performed on an outpatient basis requiring only brief general or intravenous sedation anesthesia, State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility. Hand Surgery
As a plastic surgeon with a broad scope of practice including cosmetic, reconstructive and hand surgery, the demands on my time and energy can be significant. But I never find this burdensome because of the deep satisfaction that comes from surgically intervening in the lives of others to eliminate suffering, restore function, and even enhance appearance. In order to sustain the focus and concentration necessary in my field, however, I feel it is extremely important to allocate time for regular exercise and recreation. So when I am not working, I typically enjoy tennis, hiking, biking, swimming, golfing, skiing and exercise classes as my primary forms of aerobic conditioning. I also enjoy music, particularly if performed live, and movie viewing. I am an avid Philadelphia sports fan following the Phillies and Flyers, but I am particularly rabid when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles. I also enjoy watching both live and televised tennis tournaments. But more than any of these avocations, I enjoy being together with my family, whether it is just relaxing at home or joining them in a vacation setting. I consider myself blessed to be able to share in their lives and personal development, which for me, is my ultimate source of satisfaction.
Reconstructive Surgery

Breast Reduction
Excessive breast enlargement, also known as macromastia, is a condition which affects many women. Thigh Lift
Face Lift
A thread lift is a simple procedure where Dr. Robert Kimmel uses temporary sutures to produce a subtle, but visible lifting of the facial skin. Unlike a surgical facelift, where excess sagging skin is trimmed and underlying support tissues brought back to a higher position on the face, a thread lift uses sutures to simply suspend the skin by stitching up portions of it. This has the effect of pulling the skin back slightly and lifting and tightening the face.
Neck Lift
Depending on this assessment, the optimal recommended treatment may be neck lift, liposuction, neck lipectomy, platysmal tightening or a combination of these techniques. Specifically, if skin and muscle tone are adequate, liposuction alone may suffice to remove excess fatty tissue. Alternatively, a neck lift is required to remove excess, loose neck skin while platysmal tightening is necessary to reinforce lax neck muscle. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility (see ‘Keystone Surgery Center’ ) under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Post-operative recovery is dependent on the type and extent of surgery performed. By carefully assessing each patient, an ideal treatment plan can be developed in order to restore a more youthful neck contour and improve patient self-confidence.
Blepharoplasty
The development of excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids or “bags” or dark circles of the lower eyelids are a significant source of concern for many individuals. Nose Surgery

Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a medical term used to describe enlarged breasts in male patients. This condition is actually quite common, affecting up to 40 to 60 percent of adolescent males during their pubertal development and may affect either one or both breasts. However, most cases of adolescent gynecomastia resolve spontaneously with the transition to adulthood. For those males with persistent post-pubertal gynecomastia, surgical removal of excess breast tissue is appropriate.

Facial Implants
The placement of facial implants represents a technique for the enhancement of facial shape, balance and symmetry. Following a careful pre-operative facial assessment including precise measurements and radiologic evaluation, appropriate implants are selected for facial enhancement. Employing a brief general or intravenous sedation anesthetic,State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’ ) these implants can then be precisely placed to augment a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones or reshape a “weak” jawline. Some people think a tummy tuck is an alternative to bariatric surgery. But this is not at all the case. Dr. Kimmel wants his abdominoplasty patients to be within 10 percent of their ideal weight, preferably at their ideal weight. When a potential patient comes in who has not lost all of her baby weight yet, we advise her to come back when she has lost all of the weight. This is because weight loss will set up more sagging skin, which is what this surgery is trying to correct. This is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure.

Microdermabrasion, also known as a “Lunch-time Peel”, is a safe, non-surgical, non-invasive skin resurfacing system. The massaging action of the microdermabrasion treatment creates a deep exfoliation or flushing and cleansing effect below the skin surface. The result is a vibrant, healthy appearance and complexion. Microdermabrasion requires no anesthesia, can be perform quickly over the span of a “lunch break” and requires no “down time”.
