Teeth Cleaning
A regular professional dental cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria above the gum line. Along with twice-daily brushing and flossing at home, that’s about all that a healthy mouth requires. For people with periodontal disease, however, a regular dental cleaning isn’t enough to interrupt the cycle of bacterial infiltration that can lead to diseased teeth and tooth loss. The pockets that form in the gums become deeper, and more-damaging bacteria begin to grow in them. This process of infection leads to worsening periodontal disease, as bacteria damage the bone that holds the teeth in place.
Fluoride Treatment

Crowns
The crown of a tooth consists of the visible part that extends beyond the gum line. Crown lengthening removes gum tissue and bone in a surgical procedure, exposing more of the tooth. The procedure doesn’t actually increase the length of the tooth. It simply makes more of it visible.
Bridges

Root Canal Treatment
A dental implant consists of a post that fits into the space normally occupied by tooth roots. Topped with a crown, bridge, or denture, this fixture replaces one or more missing teeth extracted because of decay, trauma, congenital deformity, failed root-canal treatment, or the wear and tear associated with extreme tooth grinding.

Dentures
Unlike conventional fixed and removable bridgework, implants don’t require support from the teeth next to the ones they replace. The teeth that support bridgework must be ground down so they can be crowned. With implants, no additional teeth need preparation. Because implants support themselves, they provide greater stability during speech and chewing. Like the roots of natural teeth, implants stimulate the jawbone and help preserve it, whereas under conventional dentures or bridgework, unstimulated bone deteriorates and disappears, gradually changing the functional fit of the dental appliance and making it look unattractive.

Gum Surgery
Before gum-grafting surgery, the teeth must be clean above and below the gum line. In most cases, gum surgery requires only local anesthesia. Tiny incisions in the gums create a little pocket for the graft, which is positioned between two layers of tissue. Sutures close the incision after the graft is in place.
Tooth Extractions
If you need dental implants to replace missing, diseased, or damaged teeth, your jawbone must be tall and wide enough to hold the posts that support implant fixtures. Bone loss from periodontal disease, injury, congenital defects, or from long-ago dental extractions can narrow the upper or lower jaw in a process known as lateral atrophy. This process affects the tooth-supporting bone known as the alveolar ridge, which surrounds tooth roots. Loss of bone at the side of the jaw creates a dent that looks unnatural and interferes with the placement of bridgework or implants.
Bone Grafting
The presence of natural teeth helps stimulate the jawbone and keep the body from dissolving it in a process called resorption. Implants have the same positive effect on the jawbone as natural teeth. In some patients, however, the bone needs a little help from dental science before it can support implants successfully. If the bone is too soft, or it lacks the mass necessary for implant placement, periodontists can use bone-grafting procedures to improve the implant site.

Teeth Whitening
Fluoride fights off tooth decay and keeps natural dental enamel in good shape. On implants, however, fluoride can yield corrosion, roughness, and etching. Whitening and stain-removal toothpastes use baking soda and abrasives that can scratch implants. To clean implant-supported removable prostheses, patients should use products designed for dentures.
