Ophthalmology
Dr. Holland is a graduate of Furman University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1995 and completed her ophthalmology residency at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1999.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a progressive aging change in the central seeing part of the eye, the macula. Drusen and pigmentary changes develop in the retina, which affect the central vision. New blood vessels can develop in the diseased retina which can cause a rapid decrease in vision. Dr. Holland has the latest in digital retinal photography and optical macular tomography to detect these changes early to prevent vision loss. At home monitoring with an Amsler grid and vitamin supplements may help to reduce the progression of the retinopathy. If the macular degeneration progresses to the "wet form", referral to a retinal specialist may be required.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dr. Elizabeth Holland offers the most effective and technically advanced procedures for photo refractive keratectomy (PRK) excimer laser surgery. PRK was the first procedure performed using the Excimer laser. The difference between LASIK and PRK is that the LASIK procedure involves the creation of a corneal flap is and the laser is applied to the inner tissue of the cornea. With PRK the epithelium (or outer skin of the cornea) is removed and a laser is applied to the surface of the cornea. PRK can be used to correct low to moderate levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Cataracts
Over fifty percent of people over the age of 60 (and quite a few younger than that) suffer from cataracts. Almost everyone develops cataracts as they grow older. Cataracts form at different rates and can affect one or both eyes. A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye's natural lens. The lens scatters the light passing through the eye to the retina. Early cataract changes may not disturb vision, but over time the cataract will blur the vision and cause glare symptoms. The changes can be so gradual that the patient doesn't even realize how much vision they have lost.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and Cataract Surgery are procedures where your eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens or implant to achieve sharper focus at near, intermediate, and/or distance.
Eye Exam
Only after a thorough eye exam, will you and Dr. Holland be able to determine if PRK is an option for you. If you prove to be a good PRK surgery candidate, you will be given additional information about the PRK surgical procedure. This will enable you to make an educated decision about whether or not to proceed. It is vitally important to be sure you have all your PRK questions answered to your satisfaction.

Diabetic Retinopathy
High blood sugar can damage blood vessels in the retina, and when they are damaged, they can leak fluid or bleed. This causes the retina to swell and form deposits. This is an early form of diabetic retinopathy called nonproliferative or background retinopathy.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Active wrinkles are creases that develop from making the same facial expression thousands of times. These lines result from the muscles of "facial expression" and are typically located at the outer eyelid area (crow’s feet) and in the forehead (frown lines). Eyelid Surgery
In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the upper eyelid crease to remove excess eyelid skin and fat. The incision is then closed with sutures. Because the incisions are made in the eyelids’ natural contours, they are barely visible and fade with time. There is a mild amount of bruising and swelling following surgery, but this is usually gone within seven days. Patients can typically resume work within three days after the procedure.
