Colonoscopy
Virtual colonoscopy is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure that takes standard CT images of the abdomen while special software converts those images into a three-dimensional moving picture of the inside of the colon. A specially trained radiologist uses these images to look for polyps or abnormalities.

Chest x-ray and sputum cytology. A chest x-ray makes images of the heart, lungs, airways, blood vessels and the bones of the spine and chest. Imaging with x-rays involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. Sputum cytology is a procedure in which a sample of sputum (mucus that is coughed up from the lungs) is viewed under a microscope to check for cancer cells. However, the use of chest x-ray and sputum cytology, individually or in combination, has not resulted in a decreased risk of dying from lung cancer.

Nuclear medicine radiologists also utilize radiopharmaceuticals to treat hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, solid tumors or painful bone metastases. After graduating from medical school, nuclear medicine radiologists must complete a lengthy four-year residency in diagnostic radiology and be trained in a wide variety of imaging techniques, including the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radioactive pharmaceuticals. Nuclear radiologists are further required to have one or more years of additional nuclear medicine training. All educational programs must be certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Ultrasound
Interventional radiologists (IRs) use their expertise in reading X-rays, ultrasound and other medical images to guide small instruments such as catheters (tubes that measure just a few millimeters in diameter) through the blood vessels or other pathways to treat disease percutaneously (through the skin). These procedures are typically much less invasive and much less costly than traditional surgery.

Is a specialty that uses safe, painless and cost-effective techniques to take images of the body and treat disease. Nuclear medicine gathers medical information that would otherwise be unavailable, require surgery or may necessitate more expensive diagnostic tests. Nuclear medicine imaging procedures often can identify abnormalities very early in the progress of a disease – long before many medical problems are apparent with other diagnostic tests.
Mammography
The ACR currently requires that medical centers participate in physician peer review to obtain and maintain accreditation; only institutions and programs that specialize in mammography and stereotactic and ultrasonography-guided breast biopsy procedures are exempted. However, the ACR requirement is voluntary, and noncompliance incurs no penalty other than refusal of accreditation. The JCAHO similarly requires that all staff participate in peer review, with a continuous random review of 5% of cases for ongoing credentialing.
Computed Tomography
Is also known as a CAT (computer assisted tomography) scan. A CT scan provides cross-sectional X-rays of the body, which are called slices.
