Primary Care
Dr. Ford was honored as the Michigan Young Optometrist of the Year in 1995, and Optometrist of the Year in 2014, for his outstanding contributions to Optometry and the community. Dr. Ford is a primary care Optometrist with particular interest in specialty contact lens fittings and eye disease. He is currently active on the legislative committee of the Michigan Optometric Association and part-time Clinical Faculty at the Michigan College of Optometry. He is active in his church and enjoys golf and hockey. He and his wife, Carla, live in Grand Rapids and have 3 grown children.

Myopia can increase your risk for specific eye disease. High myopia can lead to myopic degeneration causing best corrected vision to be less than 20/20. Myopia also increases our risk for retinal detachments, glaucoma and cataract formation. All of which can lead to loss of vision.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among elderly people, who slowly lose their central vision. In time, a person with macular degeneration may find it difficult or impossible to read, drive or recognize familiar faces. Though currently there is no cure for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it appears there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of getting the disease and experiencing AMD-related vision loss.
Cataracts
West Michigan Eyecare Associates is committed to caring for our patient’s complete ocular health. Our patients will receive a Complete Eye Health Examination, and our doctors are trained to diagnose and treat most ocular diseases. Routine vision exams will be billed to a patient’s vision insurance plan if one is available and we participate. A routine exam means there is not a medical diagnosis. Routine diagnoses include myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. If a medical diagnosis (cataracts, glaucoma suspect, foreign body, diabetes, dry eye, etc.) is determined by the doctor, the exam in no longer routine, but medical. This means we will bill your medical health plan. We request a copy of your medical insurance card in your chart for these reasons.

Low vision is a general term that refers to a partial loss of vision that cannot be adequately corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, medications or surgery. Common causes of low vision include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, inherited retinal degenerative diseases, glaucoma and optic nerve atrophy.

Skin Cancer
Some patients may be put off by the limited color options but most will be reassured when they are reminded of the health benefits of a polarized lens. In addition, most patients may be reassured in the purchase of a polarized sunglass due to the fact that it can help to prevent wrinkles around the eye as well as skin cancer.

Physical Therapists

Occupational Therapy
Christina Hedlich is our occupational therapist. She specialized in low vision rehabilitation and helps with evaluation and treatment of our vision rehabilitation patients. She graduated with her bachelors in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University and received her masters in Occupational Therapy with a low vision focus from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She also has her graduate certificate in low vision rehabilitation from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
