Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, or Thermography is a non invasive test of physiology (the science that deals with the functioning of the organism and its parts). It is a valuable procedure for alerting your doctor to changes that can indicate early stage breast disease and in the evaluation of unexplained pain. It is also helpful in monitoring therapy progress for multiple conditions and injuries such as back injuries, arthritis, headache, nerve damage, fibromyalgia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), dental problems and TMJ, artery inflammation, vascular disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc disease, inflammatory pain conditions, skin cancer, sprains/strains, stroke screening, whiplash and also digestive disorders.
Primary Care
In November 2009 The United States Preventive Services Taskforce, an independent panel of experts in prevention and primary care appointed by the federal Department of Health and Human Services, changed the recommendations for women receiving screening mammograms. They advised women to start at age 50 (not 40) and to undergo mammography every 2 years (not annually). Dr. Diana Petitti, vice chairwoman of the task force and a professor of Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University, said the guidelines were based on new data and analysis and were aimed at reducing the potential harm from overscreening. She was quoted in a N.Y. Times article “While many women do not think a screening test can be harmful, medical experts say the risks are real. A test can trigger unnecessary further tests, like biopsies, that can create extreme anxiety. And mammograms can find cancers that grow so slowly that they never would be noticed in a woman’s lifetime, resulting in unnecessary treatment.”

He received his Board Certification in Family Practice in 1979 and was awarded the degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice in 1986. He is also certified by the National Board of Examiners in Integrated/Alternative Medicine and Natural Health Science and by the American Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology. Emergency Care
The Preventive Medicine Center of Gainesville, Inc., is an outpatient facility that provides clients with consultative services for non-emergency health problems. Its physician(s) do not provide in- hospital care or services outside of Center hours. At this point in time there is no other physician trained in the services the Center is providing to provide after-hours care. We understand that emergencies can arise after hours. If you have a life-threatening emergency (e.g. chest pain, loss of consciousness, possible stroke, etc.) immediately call 911. These types of problems are not appropriately treated with alternative therapies. If you have an urgent problem after Center hours you must go to either the closest Hospital Emergency Room or an Urgent Care Center. We appreciate your understanding.
Electrocardiogram
A trained clinical thermographer uses a very sensitive medical digital camera to take thermal images of the body and sends this data to a computer. All living organisms, including humans, radiate heat energy in specific patterns. These images are then interpreted by a qualified physician. In this way, skin temperatures, thermal and vascular patterns, and sympathetic nervous system responses can distinguish between normal and abnormal physiological function of the body. Tests of physiology may be a new concept to the reader. One example is an EKG, which is a physiological test of heart electrical function. Thermography is different than an X-ray, where radiation is passed through the body and an image is developed on an X-ray plate film to produce an anatomical image. Thermography provides valuable information that complements the anatomical images from MRI scans, CT scans, ultrasound, mammography, or X-ray.

Cervical Cancer
I would like to point out that there is a difference between screening procedures and diagnostic procedures. Screening procedures, which we all assume should be 100% safe, are used to look periodically at symptom-free people for some undetected disease. For example, a Pap smear in women screens for cervical cancer or pre-cancerous changes, or a PSA test in men screens for possible prostate cancer. Screening detects rather than prevents disease, and it makes sense the earlier a problem is uncovered, the better the odds of fixing it. By contrast, diagnostic procedures are evaluations of people who already have some suspicious symptoms that may indicate a potential problem. So the question arises, is it safe to expose a healthy woman’s breasts to radiation year after year as a screening procedure?

X-rays, CT Scans, Ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance Scans are all tests of “anatomy” and are measurements of structure of your body. But suppose you have pain that cannot be explained by these studies. Examples are pain due to an occult fracture that does not show up on X-ray, myofascial pain in the muscles, or leg pain related to inflamation in the blood vessels. Perhaps you have pain in the neck, back or head that is unexplained, or you were in an automobile accident but your X-rays were “normal.” Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging is the only method available for visualization of pain and pathology anywhere in the body. When a person is in pain, there are thermal pattern changes that take place in the skin related to activity in the autonomic nervous system. In addition, inflammatory conditions in the soft tissue (these are not seen on x-ray or MRI) will cause changes in thermal patterns. Nerve compression, such as in a “pinched” nerve in the neck or back, causes changes in thermal patterns. Certain diseases such as autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, or toxic metal poisoning may all cause thermal changes.

Just like with any technology, there are some limitations with thermography. Traumatic vascular injury is more effectively imaged by doppler ultrasound. Tumors that are slow growing and do not have angioneogenesis may not show up on thermography. There is no other technology available, however, that can paint a picture of a person’s pain other than Thermography and it fills in the gap where X ray, CT, ultrasound or MRI may not show what the problem is.
MRI
One of the methods of patient evaluation used at the Center is acupuncture meridian analysis of bioenergy flows using muscle reflex testing called CRA (Contact Reflex Analysis). This is different than evaluation of biochemical reactions that occur within our bodies using lab tests, and is in the realm of physics, much in the same way MRI scan analysis is based on the fact that we are composed of atomic particles and have energy flows. We use CRA to help adjust doses of medications or supplements a patient takes. For instance, in hormonal replacement therapies often the lab reference range is very wide, but an individual patient’s “optimal” range is narrow. Using CRA findings in addition to lab findings, we are able to prescribe custom, compounded bioidentical hormonal replacement therapies for men and women. CRA was developed over 40 years ago by Dr. Dick Versendaal, a chiropractic physician and nutritionist in conjunction with medical doctors, a dentist, nutritionists, and others. Dr. Versendaal continues to teach CRA courses to physicians, chiropractors, veterinarians, and other health care professionals in seminars all over the United States. Dr. Erickson has trained and lectured with Dr. Versendaal.

Mammography
One third of all breast cancers occur in women below the age of 45. In this pre-menopausal age group mammography is less accurate in picking up cancers because pre-menopausal women have denser breast tissue than post-menopausal women. Dense breast tissue is not an issue with Thermography. Thermography is an FDA adjunct to mammography and can be used safely at any age.
Computed Tomography
A thermogram of the entire body can be taken. This is not safely possible with CT scans due to high radiation exposure.

X-ray, CT, Ultrasound and MRI are all tests that look at anatomy or structure. Thermography is complementary to these tests and is unique in that it looks for physiological change. It can visualize painful areas when X-ray or MRI has not demonstrated the cause, such as in a hairline fracture, soft tissue injury, or neck pain from a whiplash.
