Dental Care
At Slade Veterinary Hospital, Inc., we know that pets can develop dental problems just like people do. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) cites that more than 80% of dogs have some dental disease by the age of three. Dental disease is frequently diagnosed problem but is entirely preventable.
Vaccination
Please bring your pet’s complete medical history, including vaccinations, prior labwork, and a list of diets and medications. You may email or fax this information to us prior to your visit so the doctor can review it. Lastly, we ask that you bring a list of questions or concerns for your veterinarian—don’t hesitate to ask anything about your pet’s health and behavior.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends that all purebreds meet certain health clearances to maintain breed standards. We offer both OFA and PennHIP orthopedic evaluations, as well as OFA thyroid and dentition evaluations. Please speak to one of the veterinarians for ophthalmology, cardiology, or other specialty referrals, if desired. Please call our hospital to schedule your appointment and use the following links to download and complete your appropriate forms and bring them to your appointment.
Comprehensive Examination
Preventatives such as Heartgard Plus, Interceptor, Nexgard, Frontline Gold, Bravecto, Revolution, and Vectra 3D can be picked up at the hospital anytime during business hours without a refill request as long as your pet is current with an annual examination and a heartworm/tick test.

Pain management is an essential part of your pet’s care, both during the surgery and afterwards. Individualized pain management protocols are always discussed during a pre-surgical exam.

Ear Infection Treatment
The screening begins with a complete physical exam to assess overall health. Any medical problems, such as ear infections or skin diseases, are identified and treated appropriately. We are very careful with any drug therapy used during a pregnancy. A vaginal exam is part of this process to ensure that there are no physical obstructions, such as strictures, vaginal bands, or prolapses that would impede a breeding or whelping. We will also discuss which foods and dietary supplements are helpful or harmful as we plan for pregnancy.

Kidney Disease Treatment
To keep your pets feeling their finest in their later years, we recommend bi-annual visits to address any age-related health problems. These may include conditions like arthritis, vision or hearing loss, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and behavioral changes.
Periodontal Disease Treatment

Dental Surgery
The most common oral surgery performed is tooth extractions since the degree of disease, health status of the patient, and financial constraints often make this the best option in our pets. If a crown or a root canal is desirable, we will refer you to a board-certified veterinary dentist.
Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Martin's professional interests include ultrasonography (abdominal and echocardiology), soft tissue surgery and internal medicine. She values forming relationships with her clients and getting to know their pets so she can provide the best care and advice for each individual.

Laboratory Services
The primary cause of missed breedings is inappropriate timing of the fertile period. We can pinpoint ovulation with progesterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) blood tests, which identify the window of maximum fertility. We utilize Idexx Laboratories for our progesterone testing, which allows us to receive results twice daily. LH testing is done at our hospital. These blood tests, used in conjunction with vaginal cytology, vaginoscopy, and clinical behavior, enable us to use the best semen sample at the most fertile time. Bring your bitch to us as needed for blood testing or leave her with us during her cycle in our safe and monitored facilities. To minimize your travel, we can also work with your local veterinarian for some of this testing.
X-Ray
Our radiology equipment utilizes a Fuji digital radiography system, which produces high quality diagnostic images for an accurate diagnosis. The advantages of our system include rapid turnaround time (within seconds!) and decreased radiation exposure for staff and patients. X-rays are commonly used to evaluate the chest and skeletal bones.
Microchipping
We offer comprehensive physical examinations with vaccines and microchips for litters at 7-8 weeks of age. Included in this visit are health certificates for each puppy and coupons for initial wellness visits for new puppy owners you refer to us. Domestic travel health certificates can be issued at this time, if necessary.
